When I look on FOTD's, people say they apply a shadow as a wash. What exactly is a wash?

It's just sort of a light application of usually a natural color all over the eye area. Like, if I am just going to the grocery store and can't bear to leave my apartment without makeup on (yeah, I'm weird), I'll do a "wash" of Deckchair Pigment from my lash line to my brow really lightly with just some Dipdown to line. Some people will do a wash and then put other colors on the lid and crease, which I find can make blending the crease into the brow bone easier. Hope that makes sense!
