Why is it that

MAC charges so much for brushes? i saw a brush in my local drugstore that looks like the 182 brush and does the same purpose and its £5 for the cheap brush and £30 for the 182

mac's brushes tend to feel better against the skin, be better quality workmanship, and last longer.

What's it made out of? What's the handle made of? I'm sure the bristles are cheap, poorly clamped in/attached to the handle, and won't pick up/deposit product the same way.

Maybe brand recognition or quality? I'm not sure, but I just got a mark eyeshadow brush that has pretty good ratings...gonna try that out.

the brush hairs are made of synthetic (sp?) hairs kinda like MAC but not as soft and the handle is pretty much on there tight. I'm thinking of buying it on thursday for my new SS MSF only. i used to have one back in the past when i werent into MU that much and it picked up a real good amount of blush/highlighter. The handle is made of plastic like the MAC one. It looks like this except it has the store brand on it

You buy the best you can afford, hon... the thing about brushes is they're almost an investment item like a good basic suit. If you take care of them they'll last you years and years - whereas cheaper ones will shed, not deposit color as well, and just all around fall apart. Meaning you buy more of them...
I've heard good things from fellow specktraettes about Crown Brushes - you may want to google them.

mac brushes are hand-crafted, with natural hairs. if taken proper care of, these can last years, even with regular use. i've had some of my mac brushes for 5 years, and they're still in perfect shape. i take really good care of my brushes, and they all look good as new.

i've gone through some cheaper brushes, and even some of the higher end, non-mac brushes, and you'd be surprised how noticeable the quality differences are. even the brush set, or SE brushes aren't as good. seriously, it's better to slowly build your full-size brush collection, as you can afford it, rather than trying to compensate with cheaper ones. my mac brushes are hands down the best.

i can't bear the feel of a cheap brush on my face after using good brushes(not just mac brushes). it almost feels like it's ripping my face apart.

you get what you pay for and if you pay for coarse bristled brushes that's what you'll get. buying good brushes and taking proper care of them is worth every cent you paid.

i think its better to invest in more expensive brushes as when taken care of they last forever and more or less cost the same when you keep replacing cheapo ones

The 182 is made of cruelty-free extra soft goat hair. If the drugstore brush is synthetic bristle or "we don't care how much it hurts the animals" hair then it will be a lot cheaper to start with. Then there is the quality of the other components and the quality of construction. M·A·C brushes don't shed much hair (although I've noticed that my 129SE sheds a lot more than a regular 129 which really doesn't lose hairs at all).

Out of interest, which store was it?

There you go. The MAC 182 brush is NOT made of synthetic hair, it is 100% goat hair (at least I think it's goat). The price is justified because the quality of the brush is miles beyond anything you can buy for $5 at the drugstore. I know, because I have tried other brushes and they are hopelessly inferior.

Sure, the markup on their brushes is really high, but I don't mind paying it because imo it's worth it.

I've always found it's true that if you pay more, the quality IS better, but you're crazy to think that most of the markup isn't also for the high cost of their promotion and packaging to give it the exclusivity and give the customers the feeling that they're really getting something special and not easily acquired by just anyone.

Now, I have bought some brushes at Walgreens that I absolutely love. I don't remember the brand name & could go back & check in my bathroom, but they come in a plastic package with hot pink backing. I have a double-ended brush with a med-lg fluffy wedge-shaped shadow brush that I would not part with for anything. I did read the label, etc., for what the hairs are from, and don't remember, but it's a lovable brush! Then they had another line with ivory handles that looked really good, too, but I didn't try any of them.

Here's a link from an email I just got. Origins has synthetic hair brushes & says they are proud that they're non-animal product:
