Would you be compelled to do something?

I need advice/opinions on this situation. I live in a small apartment complex that is mostly made up of retired persons, teachers and small families. Across the street from the apartment complex, are several blocks/streets of townhomes. Although we are not together, we both share the same name.
My building directly faces the small road in between the apartments and the main road to access the streets where the townhomes are.
There is a large pond with a fountain out in front of the apartment complex which many ducks, at least 15, live in.
The only female duck in the whole bunch, had two young male sons and they were always together. The poor female was constantly ganged up on by the other males and her little sons would always defend her and beat up the other ducks. LOL it was cute. They mostly hung around the building I live in so I would always feed them and look out for them. A lot of people loved the ducks, especially the female since she was the last female in the entire bunch.

Last night, some bitch, driving at least 65 mph down the small road in front of my building, ran over the female duck and killed her. Two teenage girls that were out walking saw the woman flying down the street and rolled over top of the duck and didn't even stop. All they knew was a woman driving a silver car. The girls told a lady that lived in the building next to me, everyone called her "Duck lady" because she always took care of the ducks. These ducks were like actual animals to her so she freaked out and started telling everyone. It really hurts and pisses me off that some stupid jackass thinks they can barrel down the street like a bat out of hell and run over an innocent mallard duck. There is no speed limit, but there is a duck crossing sign. There used to be a 15mph speed limit on that street but they took the sign down a couple of years ago, or so I heard. NOBODY drives that fast on the street, most people are mindful of the unseen speed limit and I always see people yielding to the ducks, or other animals. What if it had been someone's dog or cat or even a child?

It really infuriates me that someone could do something, without even thinking or giving a shit less. I feel compelled to complain to the management and get them to put up a speed limit sign. I know if it had been any of my animals and someone did that, I would seriously be in jail right now. A bunch of people over here are outraged and we all want to get a petition started. Would you be compelled to do something in this situation? It's not just about the duck, but the fact that people need to slow the fuck down. This is a place where people roam the streets with their pets and that kids play in.

since it's an apartment complex I would compel them (via petition if needed) to check with the city on if the speed limit is still in effect. If the speed limit is still 15 MPH then I would ask the city or the apartment complex to replace the missing sign.

I would also suggest talking to the complex about rehoming the ducks to a safer habitat.

I agree with Janice. Definitely see what you can do about a sign or even a neighborhood watch. As far as re-homing the ducks, that's a good idea but who's to say other birds or ducks won't come back to the fountain?

Oh my gosh Brittney that breaks my heart! People are terrible sometimes. Anything regarding the mistreatment of animals boils my blood and makes my heart ache. I would seriously talk to your apartment managers and start the petition that Janice was talking about. So sad.

May that duck rest in peace.

if you can do something about getting a sign at least you know you've made the difference and feel better about yourself I think... anyway I hate people like that.. who dont really seem to think about their actions

That's so sad.

You should definitely look into the speed limit thing. If it's that residential, especially with old people and kids, someone could seriously get injured

I agree with ever body here i would def. talk to somebody whether the apt. manager or the city or who ever to put a speed limit back up its not ok not to have some kind of limit especially in residential. Good luck i hope some thing can be done.

Thanks everyone!
Although I'm still really sad about the female duck, I feel better after reading everyone's posts!
Tomorrow I'm going to the management office after work. I tend to get mouthy & angry on the phone and I feel it's best I talk about it in person so I'm taken more seriously.

. I agree with the other posters - you definitely need to do something.

While the duck is incredibly upsetting to me (I love ducks!) I wouldn't make it about her when you talk to management. I would tell them that it was a dangerous situation, and that without some kind of speed limit regulation, speed bumps, or other action on their part, next time it could be a tenant or god forbid a child. If that doesn't work, you could also circulate that petition, keep copies of it, and give it to the management. That way, there is a paper trail showing that they would be liable if anything happened to anyone on that road. That should get them to fix it quite quickly.

Or, you could always go with my favorite solution. It involves a good sturdy pole, a nice speed limit sign, and a bag of quikrete (fast drying concrete) at 3:00 am.

What a sad story...some people can be so mean and cold-hearted. I would contact your local Humane Society and see if the ducks can be relocated to a pond or lake. We had a similar situation in my neighborhood, although no ducks were killed, and they were relocated to a nearby lake. It's not "just a duck", it's a living being.

That is so incredibly sad, especially since it seems like a lot of people were very fond of the female duck.

I would definitely try to get them to a safer habitat

Oh no, that driver needs to be hunted down and ............well, yes, speak to the management.*smdh* I too would be all sorts of heated on the phone, submit your suggestion and leave before she says anything dumb (i.e. budget, ordinances, etc) that might set you off.
