This is such an informative discussion. I love it.
Me too. =]

MAC did respond to my question and said, as others have stated, that the EDS powders were not tested for use around the eyes. I wish they would have done that, since it would have been really nice to know if it was actually safe or not!

I'm glad that they have to put the ingredient lists and test things. That must have been awful to buy cosmetics before, because it would pretty much probably be like buying fakes is now. You literally have no freaking clue what is in there, and it could be anything they want. Scary! So I'm glad that they have to be accountable for that sort of thing now.

I could certainly see the waterline issue being confusing for regular consumers. In the 80s, the only place I used liner WAS on the waterline. That's what liner was for, yo. I did use liquid liner to draw on those extended cat eyes (inner and outer corner, not sure what that's called), but pencils belonged in one place. My waterline.

Only old people (like my bf's mother) wore eyeliner on the top. It was striking enough that one of my bf's male buddies commented that 'your mother wears eyeliner on the top'.

Now I don't ever apply eyeliner to my waterline. My eyes don't like it much since they aren't used to it. Where do I wear my liner? Mostly on the upper lid. Exactly where I wouldn't have been caught dead wearing it 30 years ago. LOL (And skinny jeans are back - although I know enough to leave my 45 year-old ass out of those).
This sounds just like me. I don't mess with no waterline anymore. I don't even put mascara on my bottom lashes. And skinny jeans, it took me a looooong time to put on a pair of those again. (Well, untrue. I randomly bought a pair 13 years ago when flares were the rage and I looked like a weirdo rockin' them with 4" wedges.) Anyway, I remember my 80's stonewashed Jordache jeans had zippers in the back of those little skinny legs. Oh, the Gloria Vanderbilt days...

The reason I only put my eyeliner on waterlines (whether on the bottom or top) is that it looks bizarre on me any other way. When I first tried out eyeliner, I put on the lid, and it looked terrible on me. Even many years later, when I tried it again and this time with some skill under my belt, it looked horrid on me. I think it's because I have really big, circular eyes, so it looks weird aesthetically.
If you decide to try it again, try it just on the outer 1/2 to 1/3 of the bottom, along with a winged liner. It draw your eyes up and out, giving them a more almond shape.
We can't use fluidlines and powerpoints on the waterline?   Ugh!

I don't generally back up products, just because I feel like there will always be something fresh and new so one of a product is enough. However, whisper of guilt killed me. I was so in love I bought my first ever back up. I am so totally excited for this collection.

I think some products are misleading and the average person wouldn't think to research online as to whether something is eye safe. For example, this months British Vogue is advising to use the chromagraphic pencil in Hi-Def Cyan on the waterline . Reading this I'd have thought all of the Chromagraphic pencils would be safe for the waterline. They should write it on the box or an advise slip in the product for where the products can be used.

Don't get me started on "Perfume" I've had more reactions to "Perfume" then any other "ingrediant" in face/body products in general. >_<

Love my NC15/NW20 pencil as well to mask my prink/red waterline. I like white Chromaline for dramatic looks (the only white that stays and sticks to my waterline. lol)

Just a note that the dyes (rather then pigments) used in brighter shades is the issues with products near the eye. black white and nudes are pigment based. ;)

And the skintone shades are NOT lip safe. So i have a Naked lip liner and a NC15/NW20 Chromagraphic pencil for elsewhere on my face...

that thing!
I have allergies so the whites of my eyes are often pinkish, if not rather reddish. White liner on my waterline just makes my eyes look pinker. So on the rare occasions when i use something on my waterline, it's a "flesh tone" pencil - although with allergies it tends to just wash away as my eyes tear.
