MAC x Rihanna Collection Discussion (2013)

Oh noes, I hope it isn't like Pink Friday where I just could not get one because I didn't have time to stalk 24/7

They are releasing RiRi Woo with all of the collection so I you miss it on its initial release you could catch it in the summer/fall/holiday collections

I'm the first to admit that I don't follow celebrity gossip, so I might be missing something here, but I'm kinda surprised that this collection seems to be so controversial. Maybe it's just me, but frankly I couldn't care less about Rihanna's personal life, specifically who she chooses to date. I'm not a Rihanna fan because I don't tend to listen to a lot of top 40 music. However, she's a gorgeous, talented woman, with a fabulous sense of style and an incredible makeup artist. Therefore, I have every reason to believe that she's going to create really stellar MAC collections. THAT is what I'm excited about. Too many Mac collections lately have had some serious duds (sheer, unblendable eyeshadow, for example). I'm tired of that. I'm looking forward to this because if Rihanna is really being hands-on with the collection (as the article states she is), I believe it's going to be really solid. AND, a collection based on Ruby Woo!!!! I couldn't be happier about adding another retro matte to my collection! In short, I feel fully secure in being excited about this collection without having to take a stance on Rihanna's personal life.

Im hoping this means that RiRi Woo wont be as drying as Ruby Woo...

Very interesting viewpoint. I will say that I hope to see MAC pair up with more WOC whether that be Sophia Loren or Sophia that is in those Pepsi commercials to even maybe a DIVA collection with Faith Hill, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and maybe Patti LaBelle! Just to name a few....Just something to expand the respect for those beautiful iconic women who are of all skintones

It would be a beautiful to see Icons of all skintones in a collection. Yes Mac and other companies should pair up with more WOC and I would be happy to see that

The dark lipstick looks really beautiful in photos, although it's really the last thing that I need. I'll be curious to see what all the products turn out to be. I'm not interested in anything with the retro matte finish, though. My lips are no longer as young as they were when that first appeared!

And, just because I can't entirely avoid contributing to the drama, while I don't believe getting back together with an abuser is ever a good idea, singers don't get into the business to establish themselves as role models for relationships.

I don't think that Rihanna intends for others to follow her example and I don't think there's any reason to push that responsibility on her. She's an entertainer and, as such, I respect her (although I'm not a particular fan) for the fact that she doesn't use software to tweak and tune her voice. I think that makes her a good role model as a musician.

Her personal life? I'm sort of subjected to it because it gets media coverage and while I think she could do a lot better, it's not my business.

No, just like there hasn't been a white, black, indian, asian, middle eastern, etc collection.

This collection is extra special for all the reasons you mentioned.  How about it also features a black woman, not just a collection using a black model.   I'm  not trying to get into those type of issues here, but its very rare for a mainstream, non black owned, cosmetic company to create a collection centered around a black woman.  There's Covergirl Queen and I believe that's it.  I hope I am not making this into a big thing,  I just want to add a little something about the social significance of this collection that people may not realize. In the grand scheme of things this is so much more than someone's personal life. 

She's more than just black tho. She's also west indian, barbadian, south american and irish.

I think we all realize that she has a pretty mixed background. But she identifies as a black women. I mean Alicia Keys, Halle Berry, The Mowry Twins etc. are bi-racial but most would consider them to be black women. Not to sound overly sensitive, because yeah, it is just makeup, but it's cool to see women that look like us representing the brands that we support. I think that's all she was trying to say

I think it could be tough to do collections based on cultures and ethnicities because it could very easily upset or disrespect people, even if that's not the intention.
