Since people have been talking about make up and skin tone here, i guess i'll post a recent experience.

Sephora has been touting their new computerized system for determining skin color, Sephora Pantene Color IQ. It includes a "camera", which is attached to a computer, that captures your skin color when pressed up against your face at three different places. The computer averages the captures and suggests what it determines to be the most suitable foundations. You can narrow down the field by choosing coverage, finish, and whether your face is oily, combo, normal, dry, or sensitive.

It took me 2 years of trying multiple dozens of samples from sephora (yea! for sephora samples!) to finally find a foundation i like in a color that was not too egregious. After all those tests, i have determined that i am neither pink nor yellow, but, rather, neutral. Plus i have rosacea pink cheeks and dark patches along my jaw lines, so my skin is quite uneven. My base tone is still visible at my forehead. Sephora no longer carries my foundation in the local shop, so i'm hunting for a new foundation: liquid, medium coverage, natural or "radiant" finish, not drying.

The first time through the process, the recently trained SA found i had pink skin... which is not my natural base color, just on my cheeks and chin. She was quite certain i would be happy if i just tried the color, but, seriously, i actually do know better. So, after much hard work (and another SA who told her to do it to get me to be quiet), she tried again, and i asked her to skip the cheeks and dark patches. The second time it was determined i had even darker and yellow skin. So i asked her to get me samples of 3 recommended foundations.

I was walking around with them to try them from testers before i took them home, when i ran into another young SA who knew me from my years of shopping there. She took one look at the samples and commented, unbidden, on how two of them were much too dark. Yes, i don't want my whole face to be the color of my limited dark patches. Seriously, one of the samples was several shades too dark, but the original young SA was too insecure, i guess, to see that the computer's suggestion was wacky. I've noticed a bit of a trend to make the face darker than the neck and chest, which seems odd to me, but, hey, it's what's fashionable, i guess. However, i do not want to look tanned or "bronzed". I just want to look like me! The third was NARS in Fiji. It was close in value (i.e., how light or dark a color is), but no cigar, being too yellow. Deauville is closer.

Since my previous sampling period, many companies have new lines out - cosmetic science never sleeps, after all. So i'll be at it again, but i think i now have a better idea of what to look for, so i hope it won't take me another 2 years to find a new foundation.

I will say the new system may work for people with more even skin tone than old me. But if you have dark and/or pink patches, it will not necessarily come up with the right color suggestions. I suspect a sensitive human eye is still a better judge.

omg that new sephora thing is SO STUPID!!!

i was convinced by SA that it's never wrong

so she matched me and every single shade was WAY off probably about three shades darker, so i kept telling her no, i am not that shade i am this and this one and not that one... and than she was like "ok let's look at the darker ones"
DARKER? wth? lol

i couldn't believe it

While I have not tried this new matching thingamabob at Sephora, I have to chime in to say that when people choose to get their foundation in a color darker than the neck and chest, it looks so bizarre to me. Whenever I match someone for a foundation, I purposely test along the jawline in order to make sure their face matches their neck. As you said, you want to look like YOU! Not like you're wearing a mask. Then if a person wants to add a little color to their face, bring on the bronzer and dust a little (not a whole face full) of that on, and bam! Sun-kissed but still natural.

The short version: I'm with you on this sentiment!

I did try Sephora's ColorIQ and it was fairly accurate for me. My gripe was that it didn't offer suggestions in the brands that I wanted to try, so that alone made me write it off. Their online system does allow for you to enter a foundation you're currently using (provided it's also sold by Sephora), and it provides suggested matches. I found that to be even more accurate than the handheld device.

My face is naturally much darker than my neck and chest. I didn't know it was a trend. It's just my life. LOL So if I wear foundation to match my face do people perceive me to be wearing a shade that is too dark? That would stink.

As far as the Sephora ColorIQ - if a person has areas of 'unusual' pigmentation e.g. redness, dark spots, freckles, etc. it's best to not take photos in those areas because it will throw off the reading. For instance, I was working with a woman who had melasma yesterday so I didn't photograph her forehead in that area. I selected an area on her forehead that didn't have the pigmentation issue. It was helpful that she was comfortable talking about her skin discoloration. Some people get huffy and hostile if you bring up their perceived flaws. We're trained to let them bring it up so as not to offend them. Also, if a person has a lot of yellow or red undertones for some reason it seems to suggest darker foundations to compensate for the undertone. I don't know why and it's not necessarily all the time, but it's something to be aware of. It's new technology so people are still getting used to its quirks.

Hmmm...I really have been loving paintpots lately, but the swatches are not making me happy. I am thinking of grabbing Rubensque and Construvist (sp?)...but idk..if I need them.

I think it's a good idea for MUA's to ask people what they want before they start, but I also think that as a customer or client, you should take the initiative and express what you like and don't like before getting started. I haven't had anyone touch my face in a long time, but the last few times I was particular about what I wanted or didn't want. When I was at Mac I made sure they knew that I was not afraid of color and to keep Amberlights the hell away from me. I hate that shadow.
LMAO me too! I tell them I have enough neutrals. Last time someone touched my face he was like, "can I just try something"? It was beautiful.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to watch all Paint Pots and eventually bought two: Camel Coat & Tailor Grey. Both are great. CC is brighter than TG.

Clearwater is too dull and insipid.
Perky is too warm for me.
Stormy Pink is nice, but slightly too gray.
Layin 'Low is hardly visible on the eyelid.
Chrome Angel is too bright and trashy.
Constructivist & Rubenesque I have from the permanent collection and they are great.
OMG your comments have me dying...

I forgot what was coming out with this, thought for a sec it was just camel coat and tailor grey, which I don't think I like. I guess I'll wait for Thursday too.

I just order cranberry eyeshadow, based on the assumption that's one of the product used on the model for this collection! Other then that big skip!

I wear them as a base, and think shimmery ones are better (NUBILE!

). They don't last and become a mess if I wear them alone. Also I'm not able to wear primers like UDPP, I have come to the conclusion that I might be somehow allergic to them since my eyes just tear up all day when I use them.

I'm getting Perky and Layin Low. Don't need glittery ones any more or cool ones. And I already have 15-16 PPs.

Another thing, I don't know why but I have never liked Coral Crepe. I just look awful when I'm wearing it.

Hello everyone.

I joined this site a few weeks ago and I'm still trying to figure out how this forum works, please forgive me in advance if I mess up something. LoL ;) Anyway, I ordered a PP from this collection and got my package today, when I opened it, Mac had sent me a sample of their Zoom Fast Black Lash mascara. I was shocked. Mac sending samples??? Any of you got this too? Maybe it was an accident but anyway, I thought I should share.

I haven't gone to the p.o. yet to pick up my package but on my email confirmation when I ordered my PP it listed something about a sample of Zoom Fast Black mascara. I guess I'll see once I get the package. Is it a small sample sized tube?
