I am in love with my Tom Ford lipstick. I love it so much. If I didn't work in retail I could not easily justify that $49 price for a single lipstick. Rumor has it that we're actually going to get Tom Ford in our store, so I'm going to be staring at those everyday. I can already see where all my money is going to go.

Back in the days where I bought one lipstick every year or so, I sometimes got a high end one, just based on if I loved the color.

Now I could never justify $50 for one lipstick from anyone, no matter what the color or texture was. Usually those extremely high end ones, you're paying a chunk for the packaging and the "name" too, and I don't care about that.

I'll stick with MAC and remain a Tom Ford/Burberry/Chantecaille virgin - that's OK by me.

well technically payin for mac is about the same as just payin for the name cuz its no different than a dupe you'd find in the drugstore!

A MAC lipstick is $5-7 more than a drugstore lipstick now, while it's less than half the price of a high end lipstick. When MAC gets the colors and formulas right, I think they're closer to high end than drugstore, too. It's true that mid-range makeup is becoming a thing of the past.

One thing I DO spend some cash on is skincare and that's noticeably worth it with certain brands that really push the technology innovation. I need the major skincare, though, being my age, lol!

Unfortunately here in Spain a MAC lipstick is closer to the price of a highend lipstick, so sometimes it's annoying when they aren't as good as you hope for!

iiiiim just saying whether ur paying $50 for a tom ford or $15-17 for mac either way ur paying for the name n packaging esp when they add an extra $2 for special packaging. I think the only difference between the 2 other than the price is ur gonna get wut u pay for. I remember first getting into makeup I could NEVER fathom paying more than $20 for a lipstick yet later down the line I tried CD lip glow n quiff'd

luckily I had a nordy note to cushion the fact its $30 but it was the holy grail lip balm to change my life and now im on my 2nd tube. I go through em within 6 months n will continue to drop 30 on em cuz it works for ME!! now that im venturing into higher end im gonna be strategic n get wearable colors but I definitely see where ur coming from. people can spend 15 twice for a single mac color (whether its an under performing finish or not) and "backup" which is $30... while i'd rather start usin that same price as one higher end.

MAC's packaging is muuuuch cheaper than metal detailing and a brush included, etc. so you're getting some cost savings for the packaging compared to high end (the special collections are pretty much money grabs, because you're really not getting more for your money 9 times out of 10.) Paying more for makeup that has skincare mixed in, like ultra-moisturizing lipsticks or foundation, makes sense to me, again because skincare is worth more (to me) than just pretty colors.

I hear what you're saying and there's no doubt you get some value for the money out of certain high end lines (Armani is the one that really stands out for me). When MAC does go for technological innovations for real, you do get more bang for your buck, though. The EDSFs are cheaper than similar formulas from other lines and those new Huggables - $20 is a great price for what they do and I don't think there are other lines that do something similar for under $30, so that's a savings. MAC's not as much of a bargain as it used to be, but it's still enough of one that it keeps me away from the high end lines. My pocketbook thanks me, though it's thanking me less than it used to, hehe.
