Not to mention they don't always cover up the greys. Grey hairs really are a different animal. I have a few and they are curly (!) - a big difference to my dead straight hair.

Yes, this is what I meant by different texture. Funnily enough, my friend who has naturally curly hair grew very straight grey hair. She always wanted naturally straight hair, but not in THAT color. LOL

And yeah, drug store hair dye... You get what you pay for. A friend of mine is a colorist at an upscale salon. Fixing color accidents is very expensive, especially as do-at-home hair is often overprocessed as people use it way too often as it doesn't always cover too well. Striping color and making it look "normal" again is the most difficult. Oh well, I still understand why people resort to drug store color. Once you have grey hair and start getting it colored at a good salon, you can budget at least 150 - 200 bucks each month for maintenance every month.

Way back in the day my husband had long hair. I have almost always had short hair, but I had a thing for guys with long hair when I was younger. He's in the military now so it's super short, but I miss it sometimes. My little rocker dude!

He grew the mustache just for fun over a year ago and I haven't let him shave it ever since! He looks like an Italian immigrant from the 20's and I love it. LOL

Now I have like 5! Ugh lol I get pissed whenever someone tries to pull them out! I'd rather gray than go bald! Or thin! My stepmom owns a salon so I'll have no trouble coloring once it's needed lol

Gray hair is actually white, but as it mixes with your natural hair, it appears to be gray. You might also end up with odd hairs that are half and half, i.e. an inch gray, and inch your natural youthful color, and then gray again. This version of gray is ideal if you want to go for the salt'n'pepper look, but I would say that most people will not be able to achieve this look. Often, life events will accelerate the graying process and more and more roots will produce gray hair. It's a vicious cycle.

Basically, gray hair is lacking pigments, which makes it also harder to dye. The color cannot grab onto any existing pigments in the hair, which makes the color fade away much faster. This is more prominent in darker hair. You've probably seen older ladies and gentlemen that attempted to keep a full head of dark brown, but it turns out as a brassy redish tone. My advice is to start early to go a shade lighter (or even two shades).

Consider yourself lucky that you have a professional in your family.

I'm sure you stepmum can help you out or at least give you a discount. Coloring hair in regular intervals (at the most 3 weeks if you want to avoid unsightly roots) can get really expensive, especially when you go for quality products (and avoid do-it-yourself bottle dye from the drugstore - those will dry out your hair even more and that's what you want to avoid as the gray is already very coarse).

LOL at not pulling them out. I totally agree. Who would pull them out anyway? You either live with the gray hair or you dye them. Pulling them out is not a solution.
