I used to feel the same way! I always thought I was way too dark to wear such a bold lip but I think you just need to find that perfect red. It took me awhile but I love Dubonnet, Classic Dame, Seriously Rich and now Queen's Sin. You should check out the mattenes, they have such a great array of reds, I'm sure you'll find one!
