Americans value beauty over intelligence

Well, in my experience, quite a few people will perceive you as being shallow and stupid if you are concerned about your outward appearance. When seemingly credible public figures make such comments (valuing beauty over intelligence), it just reiterates the perception

I think the notion that people who spend more on beauty products than education means that we value beauty over intelligence is illogical and idiotic. First of all, education =/= intelligence. There are plenty of intelligent people who haven't gone to a university of some sort because it isn't right for them. I want to do something that doesn't require an expensive education, but I'm also very involved in other intellectual pursuits. But because I love the artistic aspect of make-up, that means I'm a bimbo?

Equally, if I don't wear makeup on a daily basis, does that make me smarter? Am I more intellectual for not spending money on beauty products?

Well, I also think of it as an education will get you $1,000,000 more on your income over your lifetime. I had to finance a lot of my education and I see the end numbers that I will be paying after interest and principle- sure it's scary- but I'll earn that back in my lifetime and then more.

Some financial gurus say the only things you should ever finance is real estate and your education because they both appreciate.

Regardless, if I'm in a position where my education makes me more income for my entire lifetime then I will feel more at liberty to treat myself to beauty rituals because I can afford to.

I saw a study somewhere recently that shows how education can make you more money in your lifetime, but that too much education can actually hurt your overall earning capacity.

Basically, if you've done a lot of education in the early years of your life (say, a PhD before you're 30), you've sacrified a lot of years that you could've spent earning experience in the workplace. As a result, your earning capacity over your lifetime is significantly decreased.

I don't think beauty necessarily fades, it just changes and if someone's perception of beautiful is only someone who's young, then I guess it can fade, but I have seen some beautiful older women who don't appear to have had work done.

Well if you go to a public school thats free in itself, at that age its your parents who decide if they can afford a private school or not. And college lasts around 5-6 years for a regular degree, and 2 more years for a masters. If your instate thats about 45,000 dollars for me for my whole life time. Considering i have the next 70 years for cosmetics, plastic surgery(if i do get it im still young for botox), hair cuts its going to add up over the next 70 years.

College really didnt teach me much, all that book smart people tend to forget calculus, organic chemistry, biochemistry as the years pass. I think for a lot of students in college, they arent happy with school, it consumes your whole life, and its very stressful and highly competitive. I think professors just want you to learn how to be an analytical thinker, they want you to open your mind about the world and be a good problem solver and of course they want you to memorize a huge fat 2,000 page book in the process. Everyone knows education is important now days thats why there is 100,000 students in my medium sized university with classes over 1,000 students. But feel confident doing so with some gloss and mascara on.
