Any other Academics out there?

Are there any other academics out there? How do you balance makeup and "academic appearance"? I wore makeup when going to bars over the summer and the last time I went out also. I saw a friend of mine as I was getting there and he didn't even recognize me until I all but tapped him on the shoulder because I had makeup on. I know tomorrow is going to be a long haul of a day and sometimes I just like doing makeup on those days to have a bit of fun. Only thing is... there will also be a review session and I might end up going to that with my makeup on... :-/

I just wear the makeup because I feel like it, even though I study engineering (it is not the most common combination lol). People shouldn't judge you on how much or what kind of makeup that you wear; but they do. If you want to do your makeup, then do it! do what makes YOU happy and try not to let the judgements of others bother you.

haha! I'm a fourth year Psych and Soci major at UBC, in Canada. With the exception of some reallllllllly trendy Asian girls that wear high heels to school, I feel kind of out of place wearing makeup!
I think people kinda expect me to look the same scrubby I slept in a library kinda look all the time

I wonder if it makes people take us less seriously as academics though? hmmm...

I wear makeup everyday too.. its my chance to practice.. and i love prettying up and looking a little more vibrant.
I work full time and go to school part-time (which feels like full-time) @ RYU in Toronto (woooot) and for me its all about presentation. I like to look just as put together at school as I do for work.

I guess when I say "academic" I'm implying a more specific meaning than "student". I'm talking about either students who plan on working in the field of academia to make a living or people who already make a living in the field. I mean, I work part time and I see a whole lot more makeup at work than I do at in my department or among other people who are at my level in general. There are plenty of undergrads that wear makeup daily though.

Yeah, that's kind of the thing I'm wondering about. Sure, people might judge you when they look at you for the first time, and I'm not too much worried about them. I'm more worried about people who might have contact with me later on getting the wrong first impression.

I was at a reception for after a presentation and someone noticed my nails (this is just nail polish) and commented that I have too much time on my hands. I know that she likes to tease, but that one seemed like was a bit sincere. I mean, doing your nails is almost the same as watching paint dry! I get the feeling that if you have time for a certain group of activities, it's seen as having "too much time on your hands" and you're probably not working hard enough.

I work in medical research at a teaching hospital. I think some people in academia have the thought in there head that there is to be no free time that is not collecting data, reading papers, writing grants, blah de blah de freaking blah. My research group is less like that then others, but there is always that pressure! I'm going to tell you right here and now, you will never EVER EVEREVEREVER make enough money in your chosen field (even if you didn't work in academia) to not be yourself a little bit. If your worried about the professional aspect of things, do what all the other ladies do for work and tone it down with neutral or classic colors, but don't just not wear it if you enjoy it.

Everyone needs an outlet, for some it's sports, for some it's books, for some it's makeup, for others it's a little of everything. If part of your unwind time is to paint your nails, and gloss your lips up, then do it. Putting yourself together is not "having too much time on your hands", it's pampering yourself a little so that you can face the day with a little extra kick in your step.

I am a teacher for handicapped children - at school I usually wear a neutral look with foundation, blush and mascara. I don't think it is important there to look as best as I can.
This is a typical look at 7 AM in the morning.

But if I go out in the afternoons or during the weekend, I love to wear full makeup and nail polish!!
People who just know me from work are surprised most of the time if they see my private I for the first time

Back when I did my graduate degree; I often toned my makeup down a little when I had to teach or give presentations. Some people tend to take you a little less seriously if you wear colorful makeup, and I didn't feel it was worth the chance.

I currently work in the medical device field, and when I'm just working at the office/lab I'll wear whatever. If we have people from the outside coming in, or if I'm giving a presentation or travelling to other facilities; I will go back to my neutral (slightly boring) looks. I want people to notice my qualifications before they notice my green nail polish

I am a university professor and, since one of my duties is to ensure the quality of teacher training where I live, also a high school teacher. I tend to dress business-like and put on make-up for university, but not for school - it's a really dirty school, especially the restrooms. My high school students complain about that, since I have always had a reputation of being a clothes and beauty junkie - but I wouldn't want to ruin my good stuff there.

My uni student population here is quite different from what I was used to - and interestingly enough, my mainly female students here do not seem to give a damn about what I am wearing, whereas my mainly male students at my former uni did.

I think it's good to look pretty in academia, who says you have to look frumpy at school! Of course you don't wanna walk in with huge false lashes and glitter everywhere, but a little bit of makeup on the neutral side doesn't hurt.

You put time into looking good, and it's ridiculous for people to say you have too much time on your hands! They're probably giving you a hard time because they feel insecure about their own appearance. My school has 3 campuses, one is downtown in a corporate area so people dress much more professionally, at the main campus everyone looks like a bum in their dirty sweatpants.

Don't feel bad about looking good! =)

PhD student in Biomedical Sciences here. I'm not shy with regards to what makeup I wear in the lab. I'll wear a teal liner with electric blue mascara. It's no biggie, and I get compliments here and there. Of course, I'll tone it down if I have a presentation to give or if I have a meeting with a professor. Typically, we all wear jeans and hoodies (the labs are cold!), so it's a relatively laid-back atmosphere.

Thanks guys. This is really helpful. I'm more the kind of person who likes to do a full face of makeup when I do and sometimes I like it a little bright.

I probably wouldn't do a full face on a normal school day, but sometimes I might want to wear something fun (like when I'm going to an alum get together).

I'm a high school teacher and just got into MAC. I used to always go neutral and just wear foundation, liner and mascara. I stick to the same routine now but I wear neutral shadows too. The brightest I've gone is green. I get compliments from my girl students when I wear colors instead of just neutrals. I've always been known as one of the better dressed teachers and now this is just an extension of that. I don't feel any less professional, in fact I finally look older than a 17 yr old!

i hardly ever wore makeup when i went to classes cuz i was too lazy/tired/stressed to do it when i had school stuff hanging over my head. then one time my classmate was like "wow jen i almost didn't recognize you without makeup!" i was kinda like -___- hahah but oh well. there are other days when i have a full on smokey eye and all that jazz and went to class looking like i was going to a club. haha it was fun getting strange looks but whatever, i could do whatever i want!

I'm doing Art History Major @ UBC [yey *imaginary high five*] and most of the time your just too tired to dress up. Its funny how there is on girl in my class that ALWAYS turns up late for lecture but is very immaculately dressed.
Though I can agree that people judge you/your facaulty what you do by the way you dress. Most of the time, i get mistaken for being in Enginerring... I guess I dont have that Arts vibe about me.

I go to John Jay College in NYC and most of the girls wear makeup everyday so its not much of a big deal but i mostly just wear a heavy liner and a nude lid, now a days im trying a different look where i just use soft orcher, paint pot dazzlelight e/s and sketch e/s as my liner on the lid, ever since i dyed my hair black sketch has become my favorite color it really brings out the light green in my hazel/green eyes, wheres as black liner would bring out the golden/hazel hints.

Now work is a different story, i work at a pharmacy and at the beginning i would wear different smokey eyes but i got to much for me to do so earlier in the morning that i stop wereing it all together lol. my eye makeup takes so long i cant seem to imagine how long foundation would take, thank the lord i dont even go there jaja.

I have never really gotten any negative feedback on my appearance at work. I am often wearing bright eyes and changing my hair to kinda crazy cuts and colors.. so I guess I just got lucky.
I do my work well, and on time.. so I'd like to think that holds more weight than my physical appearance, or at least keeps any snide comments at bay.
I do tone it way down when I am out working in the field, but that is mostly out of comfort (rather not sweat it all off) and keep it more natural/neutral when I have presentations.
