Best Eye Base? Prime+Prep/Shadestick/Paint Stick?

Hey, guys!

Question - what's the best product to use as a base for eyes? I've only ever done shadow over Studio Tech, but I find that it's just not really cutting it anymore. This is mostly for drag work (when I do makeup art, it's usually a more subtle look, so foundation or even bare skin is acceptable), so I need something that will allow maximum color payoff and smoothness. I'd prefer to use something that I can apply in it's native form (i.e. shade or paint stick) than something I have to finger or brush on (like a paint tube). What's the best product? I'm going to New York next week, so any product in any color is basically an option. I figure a neutral or white color, since it will be covered with eye shadow. Suggestions?

Hi there...this is a question I have all the time. The other day I tested 3 bases to answer my own question. I used
MAC Shadestick in Taupographic (or something like that)
MAC Paint in Bamboom (neutral for me, I'm NC45)
Urban Decay Primer Potion

It was easy to see which won for me. The shadestick and paint altered the color of the shadow too much. I knew that UDPP was good for lasting eyeshadow but wanted to test out the shadestick and paint because I thought if there was some color to my base then it would help the color pop more, but it changed the color and I didn't want that. The UDPP does has to be smoothed out but it doesn't take long and since it dries clear it should be ok.

I also wore these 3 tested on my hand and went to the gym. UDPP lasted longest, followed by paint and then shadestick. All 3 had the same shadow on top.

I also refuse to wear UDPP and then buy every color shadestick or paint to go with all my colors. If I were to buy a paint or shadestick I want something that could bring out all of my shadows, not just 1 or 2.

I like shadesticks, they are just easy and convenient. I have not tried UDPP, so I can't compare to that. Paints last longer than shadesticks, but the s/s are just easier.

I second this if you can still find it. It works as well as urban decay primer potion imo.
don't get l'oreal decrease, it leaves lines after a couple of hours and kinda soaks up the color.

i was using the prep and prime by mac and it was not good for me. I then tried a mac paint product and noticed the color stood out more and lasted a long time. I just purchased a shadestick and i will try it out tomorrow and see how it works.

i used to use the lancome eye primer which was ok, then i lost it n switched to benefit lemon-aid but it dried out my eyelids n doesnt really make the colors pop.. finally i caved and bought UDPP and it's the BEST! great color pay off and holds on to the eyeshadow like there's no tomorrow!
