Birth Control

Depo made me gain a whole bunch of weight, so now I'm on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo...my friend said she got pregnant while on Lo, so I'm a little scared.

I want to try something that won't make me gain weight and that will work!

Any suggestions?

I use Yasmin, it is really good at preventing the typical hormonal weight gain. I love it

Im on OTC-LO too..I didnt gain weight with it though.(but everyone is differnt any b.c pill can cause weight loss or gain)
they make a Regular OTC too.
i also heard yazmin is good
As with ANY birthcontol it has to be taken at the SAME time EVERY day. and you can't mess up there really is no "wiggle room"
And with ALL pills they ARE NOT 100% EFFECTIVE.
you should also use condoms
your friend was probably one of the 5% of women who do get pregnant while on the pill..(any pill) I think that OTC-LO works just as well as any other B.C pill. if taken correctly .

Generally (and I know there are exceptions but they really are few) the women who get pregnant while on birth control do not take it correctly. The key to it working is following the directions. Keep taking your LO, but make sure to take it at the same time every day and you should be fine.

Oh crap! I'm on OTC-LO too!!!! I'm only sleeping with one person (whom I have been for a long time now) and I stopped using condoms with him again......I do take my pill every morning around the same time though! Sometimes not at the exact same minute, so is that okay? I mean okay as in time-wise (not okay as in for me to not be using condoms).

Don't worry about it

I've asked my gyno about it, and what you're doing is fine. I always take mine w/i a 2 hour window, and haven't had any problems

I was on a generic called Mircette. No weight gain, and I didn't get pregnant.

I don't know if it's exception or rule, though

i use the patch (ortho evra). It is as effective as pills but so much easier to work with (i kept forgetting to take my pills) with the patch you have to put one on every week and that's it. I didn't experience any side effect with it.

DH and I use condoms...I cannot take any hormonal BC method and he doesn't want a vasectomy...it's worked for the last 10 years so far (my youngest is 10).

If you've already had your kids, an IUD is a great choice. My OBGYN didn't recommend an IUD for those who haven't had kids yet, 1. because their uterus isn't quite big enough for a good fit, and 2. because there is a very slight risk of infection and infertility -- so it's a good choice for those who are already done with kids, or who know they don't want any.

I really like Yasmin, though

As a med student they tell us "tell your patients to take it EVERY DAY AT THE EXACT SAME TIME" but really, within an hour of the same time is fine. As long as you take it every day. I take mine with dinner, so it's between 6:30 and 7:30 or so, and have done so for like... 7 years, and no pregnancies.

Just my experience! Hope this helps!!

I have a Mirena and take Yasmin - double the safety net!

IUDs and nulliparious women have been discussed in another thread - modern IUDs are suitable for women who haven't had children as they're significantly smaller than original designs of the 50's-70's and unless you have a butcher for a doctor, the chances of perforation are miniscule (.5%). The rates of infection and PFI are the same for childed and childfree women, as it corellates to rates of STIs not birth status. The only considered risk for nulliparious women is a 3% increase in rejections, and then it's ony a risk if you have major cramps from the back of the uterine wall.

Sorry, but I hate seeing bad BC advice being repeated.

Yeah I take Ortho-tricyclen Lo and I have had no troubles with it!! Definitely take the pill the same time everyday. I take mine at 8:30am every morning. I think Morning is the best time. Dont worry!

I'm on Yaz right now-- we'll see how it is. I'm only on my second month.

I used to be on Ortho Evra (the patch), but I developed a skin reaction to the adhesive. I would get a major rash (and you can't move it for a week) right under the patch and it would be really itchy and uncomfortable. I also have two patches now where the rash scarred my skin (despite my best efforts). Toward the end, the patch started falling off each week. I used surgical tape to keep it on, but my sensitive skin started reacting to the TAPE!!

Mind you, though, that it was okay for two years before my body decided that it didn't like it anymore. I gained, at the most, 10 lbs, but I'm a very small person to begin with (my BF is happy, cause almost all of it went straight to my ass).

My friend has a IUD. She's not a mom yet, and plans to have kids later. She didn't have any trouble with it.

I've tried the patches, i didn't like how they made my skin get all sweaty under them. I dont mind pills... I take other pills not including BC, so I just take them all at the same time.

don't worry, you should be fine. i've been using mine for 3 years and everything is fine except the several pounds i've gained. but compared to the regular OTC, when i was cranky and irritable all the time, this is god-send! my gyno said that the key to b.c. is to take it at the same time. i take mine before going to bed. sometimes i get in late so i take it a couple hours late and so far, i haven't had a problem with it. so as long as you take it that day and not miss a pill, then you should be fine.
