I had a customer snap her fingers at me last night while I was at a different table. I tried to ignore her but she started yoohooing me then. My new guests asked if I wanted to help her and I told them politely that it was their turn. The first lady proceeds to start loudly complaining about how terrible her service was and demanding a manager. At this point Randy (my boss) goes over to her and tries to find out what is going on. She demands a competent waitress that will basically kiss her ass because she can no longer deal with me.
Randy tried to mollify her but she wouldn't stop bitching. He then offered to take care of her bill should she choose to dine elsewhere. Randy is cool as shit and he knows me really well. This woman was just a royal bitch. He finished serving her and she tried to not pay her bill. He repeated that he offered to clear it--before---she had dinner and therefore she will now need to pay. She did and stated how she would never be back. He told her that would probably be for the best.
and guess what she wanted. Extra olives for her salad. That couldn't wait? I would have gotten them for her if I wasn't with a new table or if she hadn't been, I don't know, the spawn of Satan. I wish Randy would have charged her for them.
A few weeks ago I had a lady freak out and accuse me of trying to make her look stupid because I asked if she would like her grilled chicken salad with caesar or vinagrette dressing. Her husband stepped in and pointed out to her that the menu gave her a choice. So she chose and avoided me for the rest of her meal. The hubby left me a big tip though so that was cool.
I do try really hard to make my guests happy. After all, they are the ones who pay my bills. I can deal with all types but these two really stand out. Women can be picky and demanding, which is fine but don't be mean about it. Men often treat me like a courtesan. They can be very condescending. I am in graduate school and I have manners. There is no need to treat me like a pissant because I am your server.
and then there are the awesome people to balance it all out.
Thanks awesome people. We in the service industry love you.
