Depotting new matte shadows-- warning

I tried to depot (with heat) my Clarity eyeshadow and I almost ruined it. When I applied heat to remove it from the plastic container, the product in the pan inflated about 1-2 centimeters above the edge of the pan. I was horror-stricken, and I almost ruined the eyeshadow completely.

This has never happened with any of the non Matte2 eyeshadows.

Has this happened to anyone else?

fyi since the matte shadows are perm you can order them in pan form from any pro store by calling them. also sorry to hear about your depotting problem!

i've not experienced the "inflation" you had, though ive only purchased one matte2 (flourishing) and depotted it using the hair straightener method--though it doesn't heat up enough so the pan was so rigid that I chipped it a bit.

No. I don't have Clarity, but I did depot a couple that were sold out in pan form with no problems.

That's so bizarre! What did you use to heat the shadow? It sounds like you had the shadow right-side up?

I depotted all of mine (7 or 8 of them) with the flat iron method and had no problems at all, maybe it was just yours?

I depotted Pen 'N' Pink, Newly Minted, as well as Clarity, along with another Matte2 that I cannot remember. I had no problems, and I depotted them all over a candle, then flipping it over and pushing the pan off of the plastic. All of them are perfectly fine, and this time I didn't even accidentally poke any of them! =D YEY!

I depotted Nehru (a perm matte), and I ruined it. I wrote to MAC and sent it back to them and they refunded me

Hmmmm. I haven't depotted my new ones yet, but I have completely wrecked an older matte (Blackberry) in the past. Now I'm scared.

as with all matte formulas, you have to be careful when depotting. they shatter easily.

i depotted my handwritten (with a candle) and it was fine.

I used a candle flame to depot the shadow. I think next time I purchase any Matte2 shadows it'll have to be the pans.

Thanks guys!

This is basically the way I depot all of my shadows, to include the Matte2 ones, without any problem whatsoever. The only difference is that I use a flat iron. What has taken me so long to learn (and I've chipped many shadows and dented many pans in the process) is that you've got to heat the pan to the point where the very center of the plastic on the bottom starts to weaken or melt a tad. At that point I place the pan shadow side down on a folded paper towel and use a small screwdriver to gently but firmly push the pan off the plastic like Bunny does. Once I turn it over I find that I can easily take the metal pan right out with no damage at all.

I was scared to depot at all because of things like this and complicated directions but then I found a tutorial on You Tube for depotting without heat. It is so simple that even a klutz like me managed to depot 15 shadows in about 45 minutes including mattes like Passionate, Tete a Tint and A Little Folie.
