Do you buy things you KNOW you won't use....

...just because everyone else raves about them? Or because they are LE and you *might* want them later on? Do you get sucked into the hype? I am just curious, because when very anticipated collections come out (like Barbie), I seem to fall into the hype and want everything just in case. I seem to do the same when MSF are released. I feel the need to buy one of each because of all the hysteria. MAJOR impluse buying and panic. With the Barbie collection coming up, I am trying to make my list. I have a few things on the list that I probably don't need. WHY are they there? Because everyone else wants them too!

Ok, the doll - Sure she is cute. Sure they will are highly sought after. What will I do with her? Put her on a shelf somewhere so she can collect dust. But hey, at least I can say I have one right
hmm.gif
I don't need it. I would rather have $35 worth of makeup, but I am getting sucked in by the hype. Same with Moth Brown... If no one else was talking about it, I wouldn't even give it a second look probably because it is not a color that I would wear. Someone please tell me WHY it is on my shopping list! UGH! I need to be smacked. And finally, there are those beauty powders... I have 3,589 powders. Do I need 2 more? Probably not. Are they really that different? Probably not. But I want them becuase everyone else raves about them, and I feel like I am missing out on something.

Am I the only person who is like this? I mean I have to draw the line somewhere. DH gave me a good chunk of change and is letting me get as much Barbie stuff and I can, but why am I feeling the need to buy things I KNOW I won't use. Someone please tell me I am not alone here... There's got to be someone else who is guilty too, right?

You are not the only one! I get everything that make me think "oooo thats pretty!!!" I think I am getting 90% of the Barbie loves MAC stuff! -Just because I think they look pretty and one day I might actually use it. If not then... ummm... =X

I think I used one of my MSFs once, just to try what color it actually was.

I feel guilty about buying stuff until I finalize my order by clicking ''Place your order''. 2 seconds after, I get redirected to confirmation page and I go oh shit...but oh wellz. That is my thinkinking. Then I wait impatiently until I get my pkg, I opend them in less than 10 sec. play with it for 5 minutes then they get put away.

That is my MAC addiction.

I think forums dedicated to your obsession don't help

I am a regular user on a fashion forum and you see lots of gorgeous shoes and clothes and it really does encourage you to spend as you broaden your shopping horizons in a sense.

I've always loved my make up but never really been too bothered about the collections, i've been on here about 2 months and now i'm obsessed!

I'm trying to be strict with myself now and only buy stuff that i will use but it still doesn't stop me buying another pink blush when i have about 6 different ones already

i think i have pretty good control over it. i may buy too much (or what my parents and co. think is too much) but i don't buy anything i don't like or need.

when i first started buying mac i bought a few things i'm not nuts about (pink freeze & swish...pinks are not my colour) but i thought they were so pretty on my hand when i swatched them that i got them.

i sometimes think i went a little too crazy with msfs, but i felt so panicked if i only had one of each of the ones i liked, so i made sure i had at LEAST 2 of each. i ended up with 5 of the one i loved, and since my dome is almost flat on the first one, i feel the need to replace it so i still have 5.

there are things that are cute but really, mac is stupidly expensive and i'm not going to buy something just because others want and love it. i don't like lip stuff so i'm not going to get any. the only thing i'm getting that seems stupid is the doll, but maybe i can sell it in a year on ebay when i'm a poor college gal

I don't buy things just because everyone else has them. In fact, as the barbie swatches have come out, my list has gotten smaller. I am not getting the Barbie doll as I have no where to put it and, frankly, I am just not interested in Barbie (never have been, never will be).

I am proud to say that I use everything I buy (not at the same time of course). In fact, when I go get the Barbie stuff, I am going to be buying foundation. I need that and it may or may not be mac.

I hear ya AudreyNic!! I actually have a small collection compared to a lot of people here but it's still more than I will ever need or wear. As is my work place restricts a lot of my makeup choices...

I too am lemming Moth Brown now that everyone's just totally raving about it. I find the best way to control the hysteria of running out and buying everything just because it's LE, and a popular one at that, is to compile a list of stuff you really need. For example I'll say to myself - I already own 10 pink l/s, do I REALLY need another one? I only have two burgundy/plum l/g so I'll try out the plummy l/g at the store and see if it really WOWs me and then perhaps I will buy it. Also, I find it useful to look at swatches/reviews on line because it can give an indication whether it'll work for you or not. Lastly, with the Raquel collection I tried on almost everything and I just restricted myself to the "best" items. I said I was going to get the best l/g, l/s and blush out of the collection and I stuck with it. With Barbie, I have to admit it's probably not going to work

but I will try my best

I used to, but then I started getting angry that I was buying all this stuff that just sits there. I finally got to the point where I could skip entire collections or just buy 1-2 things. Turns out I didn't miss anything OMG AMAZING.

I am not going to buy a Barbie because 1) I won't do anything with it and 2) I might as well leave it for people who really want one. I'll probably just get a few e/s from the Barbie collection depending on how good they are and maybe a lip product or two if they look decent on me.

nope!

and i've been really good about it for years.

what it comes down to is: "why waste my money"?

i only buy things that look fantastic on me that i will wear. and if they're LE, i do get back-ups (and scout here for people getting rid of something that didn't work on them!).

No...I don't buy into the hype...as it stands, I am not getting anything from the Barbie collection because those colors just aren't me...take, for example, the MSFs...everyone goes nuts for them...I'm not into all the shimmer. I have Stereo Rose (which I use in my kit, not on myself) because I got it as gratis...would I have bought it myself? Probably not.

I think that my makeup purchasing is determined by what I do and don't have. Honestly, as each new collection comes out I see a product and say: oh, i don't have that, or I could use that.
I guess a lot of people who have been buying and collecting for years might have one version of one color that later comes out in a new LE collection. Then I guess its silly to buy a color that is almost exactly the same as one you have, just because it is limited edition. i say that now, watch me do something like that a year down the line :p
Me, I just got into mac about 3 months ago so everything is new to me. I got a bunch of stuff from Barbie, but I don't think I went too nuts.
However, I think the hype has definitely influenced my decisions as well and have made me more excited for each new collection. So in conclusion (as this seems to have turned into my essay, heh) I think my reasons for purchasing are mixed, but its all good cuz I try to keep it to basics (sort of) I do sometimes buy things i won't use, but only cuz its so much fun!

You mirror my thoughts exactly! Especially about the Moth Brown Eye Shadow and the Barbie. At first I didn't think I wanted anything from the Barbie Collection. Now after seeing more pictures of it, I find myself adding first one thing, then another to my list.

I'm going to write down what I want and then narrow it down to maybe three or four things. The colors in this collection that I really like, I doubt I'd wear, and the ones I would are ordinary or like others I already have.

I love Skipper and Whistle e/s, but will probably only buy Whistle and I want Moth Brown because of the hype. I love Rocking Chick l/s, but will probably get Sweet & Single because I'll get more use out of it. I'd like the Sweetness l/g if it was more like Oyster Girl with the Barbie packaging and I want the m/u bag, but do I really need yet another bag?! I love the Beauty Powder compact, but since I have really dry skin, I don't really wear much powder. And lastly, I hope I can decide by the time it is available on the MAC website, whether or not to get the doll, because like you, I'd love to own it, but then what? So yes, the impulse is there to buy things I don't really need and in this instance, anyway, I'm going to try to restrain myself!

Never.

What would be the point?? To let stuff rot away?? To clutter up an already full makeup case? I have too much makeup as it is! Also, why would I spend money on something I *know* I won't use at the offset, when I could spend the money on something I LIKE and will use?!

When MAC collections come out, some people go nuts and buy everything..just 'cause it's MAC...I guess 'cause they feel they have to, or for collection purposes. Hey..I'm all for collecting..I collect rocks, crystals and minerals specimens. I spend thousands of dollars a year on them...I collect Porcelain dolls,too...,but those are all things I can display and enjoy (and, hopefully other people will enjoy looking at them as well). I'm not going to be displaying a lipstick in my curio cabinet.

Plus, makeup eventually goes 'bad'...I don't understand the mindset of buying "just to have it"...If you're gonna use it..great! If not, why bother? Spend the money elsewhere
smiles.gif

When the new MAC collections come out, I'll admit I'm among the first to check 'em out..I look, I test, I ask opinions...If something does not do me justice, or if I have something too similiar, I pass..I've passed on whole collections if I don't see anything I want..There's too much I DO want to spend my money unwisely!

I buy things to collect and look at and never use, like my Playboy Bunny Glitter Creme, it's pretty and if I used it it wold be ruined so I won't. But I know that when I buy it. I used to feed more into the LE hype but not so much anymore. But like the P.Bunny stuff, if it's in pretty packaging I might still indulge.

I hate to say it but I totally get in panic mode with LE collections. I feel like what if I pass on something that is going to be a must have 2 years from now? I have to really budget myself when I go because after years of having a MAC addiction I have drawers and drawers of stuff I have never used.
Recently the Icon collection was the first in a LONG time that I didn't buy anything from. I just would rather wait for the colors in MAC barbie that I would wear more. I love the brighter colors!

I used to do it, but I try not to now. The last time I did it was with Sundressing, but I really like that collection anyway.

I probably won't get a damn thing from Barbie, although I'd love to get that green e/s and the red one. But, whatever, I can live without it. I'm only really sad about not getting the Barbie, because I love Barbies.
