I used to do a lot of clinical trials where I would take venous blood samples from about fifty people in a single day.

It was far more often the guys that fainted than the girls

I didn't get this post either... I am sorry. I used to know this girl who didn't even like talking about blood. Blood keeps you alive. You bleed for 5 days each month and you see it...

I thought that once a virus in blood hits the air its dead. and like the post above says... you weren't cut - so why are you worried?

ha.. your mom reminds me of my mother. My mum would have just told me to shut the hell up.

It does suck the blood got on the bag... I would have tried to look up another remedy to remove it.

I'm the same.. and it's only when it's in tubes, jars things like that, and extracted through some kind of syringe or tube (writing this is making me feel weak lol). Surprisingly I don't mind blood in any other form, be it in puddles, stains whatever I don't give it a second glance lol - weird huh?
Needless to say I faint whenever I have to get my blood taken, I just start feeling so light-headed (I don't even have to see it), and then boom...my world is blacked out lol

Hello... I'm a 4th year medical student. I don't freak out over blood when i see patients or my own blood, but if my mum cuts herself or my brother or my dogs, i feel faint!LOL
Don't worry HIV can't live on your purse, same way mosquitos can spread HIV. Hep B & C can live a little longer, but don't fret you cant catch it from your purse. All you need to do is mix ammonia with equal parts water, it will get rid of any nasties, and simple detergent will remove stains! xx

To clarify, some viruses such as Hep B & C aren't dead once air hits it, they can live a while longer, but as long as your not cut, it cant do you any harm

Well the thing is that MY mom not my friends, has hep b. So we have to be careful with things when it comes to her. She's gone a bit overboard sometimes with the safety precautions though. We don't share eating utensils, food, drinks, dont use the same towels, etc. And if it does happen accidently she completely freaks. So idk maybe she instilled some kind of fear in me lol? Cause it got worse after the doctors told us that I should get tested too for it (thank goodness I was negative!).

I was gonna post a response a while ago but I was having some issues getting on the site but thats all been fixed now =]

I think you overreacted and took your frustrations out on someone who wasn't involved. Poor form on your part.

Also, not to point out the obvious, but blood doesn't usually reactivate to 'bright red' if it's been dried and set for more than a few hours - once it's dried, it sponges off as a muddy, rusty brownish colour. So unless this is mutant blood...?

ETA: Caffin8me beat me to the punch on the latter point. Serves me right for skim reading!

Yeah I know I overreacted alot about this. And I feel horrible about it but I just wish my mom did a bit more to help me out in this situation thats all. All I wanted her to do was to just tell me something, just say something to me not practically ignore me. I'm just glad its resolved now =]

If it is mine, I faint. No hestitation! Sucks if I need to bandage the shit.

I have no problem helping someone else out though, it doesn't gross me out surprisingly. Two ocassions I can remember rushing in to save a gusher. Each time people were looking at me funny. One guy flipped his car in an intersection and didn't understand English but the blood was runnung down his arm in a steady stream. I grabbed him and held it up, he would put it down as soon as I let go so I would grab it and hold it up for him again and scold him. I didn't want him needing a darned transfusion. All the while being yelled at by my lovely boyfriend at the time.

Next instance was at a bar and a guy picked up his glass and it shattered slicing his hand wide open, I immediately applied pressure to his wrist to control the spurting of blood. Everyone else evacuated while I am asking for towels and someone to get him to a hospital. I know there are things you can get from blood but I also know it sucks to be in a bad accident and to have no one help.

To the OP, don't feel bad there are things that I cannot deal with and scrub like you did with the purse.

Wow, I can't believe that's happened! Thank goodness you were there to help those guys.

My mom just sliced her thumb with a kitchen knife a few days ago and it was PANIC PANIC PANIC! Because she started running to the downstairs bathroom immediately and I didn't know how bad the cut was. I went to get her paper napkins and bandages and to see if there was anything I could do to help and if she was ok but she only let me get only so close to her. She had to bleach the knife and the floor. I felt really bad but at the same time we both were scared and a bit paranoid because she doesn't want to potentially give us anything.

But luckily her cut wasn't as bad as I thought and its healing up fine now.
