Do you know how to french braid?

I tried tieing my french braid when it hangs down my back, and then sweeping it over one shoulder, but it is messy and bulky at the nape of my neck! How do I do it?

Did you grab hair from the side that you want to be flat? Idk exactly how to french braid but you kinda have to add that in there if you want it to lay a certain way. if you keep braiding it sort of along your head on the side opposite of where the braid will sit it should work. Sorry I suck at explaining thats prob like worst explanation ever but idk maybe it kind of makes sense?

What I did is to braid it toward the side I want it to sit on..

edit: I tried your method and there is indeed less buldge at the nape of my neck! But another problem is that it wouldn't stay on my shoulder, it keeps slipping back because my hair isn't long enough.. also I find it difficult to end the braid, there will be a long section after the rubber band that has no braid.
