The 2nd one does look much better, but note that it's using a softer colour palette as well, not simply grey/black; it's not blended much beyond the "crease", or below the browbone. I think the first one could be improved by blending a lighter grey above what's already there so she doesn't look so "punched in the face" but more made-up instead.
I find, however, that for some reason some people like that look. My sister likes having defined darker shadow like that, tho usually with browns, but still having it "disappear" when she opens her eye. I find it too harsh, but that's what she prefers. I'm personally trying to master how to blend some colour up so some shows when I have my eyes open but not look like my lids are blooming with colour when they're closed!
