My company sponsors one day annually where employees can volunteer in the communities where we have offices in major locations. They have been doing this for a few years now.

Earlier this year, I was one of the team leads in a project that benefited a commune that helps homeless people and families become self-sufficient by providing job training, affordable housing and health services.

One of the volunteer projects I did entailed prepping a plot of land for a community garden (I shoveled manure!!!

) so that the members could grow their own fruits and veggies. Members are required to put in a certain amount of 'sweat' hours and at the end of the month, they get a box of fresh, homegrown produce that they can feed their families with. Healthy and free! How cool is that?

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA and are interested in volunteering, the organization is called Alameda Point Collaborative

My job is considered to be volunteer work - would get certificate for "thank you for volunteering blah blah" from the City.

I work for the after school program , a non-profit organization (STS Academy) for students to go to after school. It offers tutoring, recreational activities, a lot of competitive contest amongst schools. I've taught for 4 years now from grades 1-4th. What got me started was that I needed a job and it paid well and hired any college student, basically.

I use to love it but... seriously, kids have dealings with the devil. Haha. I've grown tired of it and dealing with 25+ students on my own and complaints from parents and bosses - it does any body in. Seriously, I laugh when parents say their kids are "good little angels". Hookay. Regardless, I love my kids and treat them as if they were mine and I learned loads in this job.

Ive volunteered since i was 13 and i still do, just not as frequently as before.

I've volunteered at the humane society cleaning up animal poop and walking them. Also i volunteered at hospice, it was a very traumatizing and sad experience, there were people who had 2 months to live and they have no family who visits them or even seems to care, so my job was to talk to them and make them forget about their troubles for just one minute of their life. I volunteered for our states make a wish foundation, its a good feeling.

The most recent place i have volunteered for was the american red cross. I love their work i love what they do and i love to be a part of it. I did a lot of charity and disaster relief events. The most recent event was the canned food drive 2 weeks ago.

Everytime i volunteered i felt like i didn't do enough, the things i did felt soo small compared to what needs to be done in this world....

I've been doing some form of volunteering for about 17 years now. I used to do youth advocacy work for a small AIDS charity. Then I started working in women's rights so became a Trustee of a women's rights organisation. I've also done lots of short-term stuff like helping out at homeless shelters over Christmas, or stuffing envelopes for campaign organisations. I really enjoy doing something to help other people and improve their lives, even if that change is just for one day. I personally think it's really important to get that reality check and to give something back to your wider community.

I'm about to start being a mentor to a young graduate. I was really missing voluntary work after taking a year's break and felt disconnected from anything outside of work. I can't wait! I've already helped at a few group sessions over the past month and it's really reinvigorated me.

I volunteer at a local animal shelter. I work mostly with the cats, since I'm under 18 and the only dogs they have are large pitbulls. It's really a great experiences, and the scratches are worth it. =) I socialize them, aka holding and petting them, as well as clean the facilities. I'm so glad I started doing it, it makes me feel like I'm making a small difference in their lives.
