Ever Tried to Look Like....?

Have you ever consciously tried to imitate someone else's (be it a celebrity or someone you know) look?
I never have, but I've heard other women admit to trying to look like soandso.
In my day (I'm 42) the "icon" was Brooke Shields. Everyone wanted to look like her, so all these young women were walking around in tight Calvin Klein jeans, big hair, and bushy eyebrows. And oh, my, the Farrah Fawcett hair!
Farrah and Brooke did/do look great, but I figured that one of her was plenty, so I went my own way.

Sarah Jessica Parker! I bought Paula Dorf's Cream Blush in Playmate just because I heard that's what they used for her on the show. Luckily, I love it.

That's kind of like being inspired by someone else's look.
As I said, I've never consciously tried to copy someone else's look, but when I wear certain bright lipsticks(MAC, of course) I look in the mirror and realize that I have Elizabeth-Taylor-in-technacolor lips. God blessed me with the same sort of full, "pouty" lower lip that she has.
Now, if I'd *tried* to make my lips look like a young Elizabeth Taylor's, they probably wouldn't.
That's just the way it goes.

Loads of people. I will buy something if I hear a celeb uses it. Problem is that I am generally celeb obsessed not just one or two people lol.

But yeah, I imitate a lot of celebs.

^ Forgot to add. However, I won't imitate something for the sake of it. I will only copy things I LIKE.

i tend to imitate/be inspired by the J Lo makeup look. i love her smouldering eyes with long lashes and a nude mouth, complete with glowing skin. i have an olive/tan complexion that's a bit deeper than hers so it's not that hard to do.

For a twist: Have you ever been aware of someone trying to copy *your* look, and did you find it flattering or annoying?
I don't think I've ever really been in that position. However, I've had quite a few people ask me what lipstick or eyeshadow I'm wearing, and how I applied it.
I find it rather flattering.

I became really good friends with a girl that I work with, and since we started hanging out more she has taken on certain things that I do. But I dont care! I encourage it, whatever makes her happy. I don't feel threatened or any less original. She didn't wear much make-up before, and she said she used to like wearing it, and doing fun things with it. So then when we started hanging out I took her to the MAC store with me, and now she is working on filling her second pallette and asking me questions about how to apply it and doing certain things that I do.

Also, I noticed her style is looking more like mine, and thats cool too. I layer almost everything and wear big jewelry and noticed she is starting to do the same, and thats ok too! We have almost the same body type.. height weight everthing and so its cool to sorta share ideas on how to dress. I am very flattered and she's a rad chick so I don't mind at all. I'm glad she feels inspied by me to dress and look better.

Now... my 14 yr old sister hates that sort of stuff!

She despises feeling copied. Hmm I guess its because at that age you really struggle to find yourself, and be original. Its a time when your self image and esteem is very important and original.

How would you feel about it? Cool, or annoyed?
hmm.gif

Would it depend on the person and what exactly they were copying?

I get my inspiration from celebrities and people I respect. I often find myself trying to imitate the stylings of Brody Dalle or Marilyn Monroe's simple yet very noticable stylings.

I don't remember who originally said it, but "Imitation is the best form of flattery." AS long as the person doesn't become a carbon copy of you (a la "Single White Female"), then it's fine.

I often do Gwen Stefani inspired makeup. I love the dark lip look. Sometimes people will say I look like her when I do my makeup like that. Other than that, I sometimes see someone on tv or a magazine and I'm inspired by the look, but not the person. This is really fun when I see an old movie and try to do that type of look.

I, also find it very flattering. I have a friend who is always admiring my look, buying the same[MAC] products that I use, and asking me for advice on application and color choice. Good grief, I'm 42, overweight, and wheelchair-bound, so it's very encouraging to know that I achieve a look that someone else would consider worthy of emulating.
And my friend's very pretty teenage daughters think I'm "cool," and want me to teach them how to apply makeup.
Talk about an ego boost!

Fashion-wise I am pretty inspired by Nicole Ritchie's look, particularly on The Simple Life season 4, and whatever movie I happen to be obsessed with at the time, like Belle De Jour or Dr. Zhivago.
As for m/u, I look at celebs who have features similiar to mine and see what colors they use and how they apply them.

I always loved Linda Evangelista from the time she was in the George Michael Videos (Too Funky and Freedom 90) and I wanted to have her look, now I found out she liked (at one time) spice l/l ---so of course I had to have it. And now she's on the cover of Vogue - she is so gorgeous of course my face type is no where near hers.
