Those are people who are out of touch with the world. I always say there are 3 sides to every story, his, hers and the truth.

I know some of the people are like that, but thats not everyone. I feel like Northern people think we run around scraping roadkill of the road to cook and running out back barefoot to pee in out outhouses ....

Then there is the other end of the Southern stereotype... The Steal magnolia big haired full make up southern bell bimbo ...

I seriously hear you on that front!! It takes a lot for me to get offended, but I get irked everytime Nebraskans (and other midwesterners) are portrayed as hick-farmers who drive tractors to work and have Bessie the cow as a pet (or something to that effect). I live in a huge metropolitan area (of nearly 1 million people) and I do not wear overalls, chew on milkweed, or drive a tractor.

True story: I went skiing in high school with a group and when the ticket-scanner guy (from Colorado) heard us say we were from Nebraska he asked us if we had cows running down the middle of our streets. My friend replied, "Yep! And we just got us some runnin' water and a brand new outhouse!!"

I blame the media, though...because inevitably when they show the skyline of one of our cities, it's followed by five minutes of footage of cornfields and cows.

Its the same way, when people hear that I live in Baltimore. The first ? I get, "Is it just like on the Wire?" OMG, if it was I don't think I would be able to leave my house, you a**hole!. Try being a tourist sometime, so you can honestly say you've been somewhere and not just say you've seen it on t.v.

Yes, offended almost on a daily basis. Sad reality... begin to think one day you might become immune to it, but no.

Its the 21st century right?

I can only kind of tell where a white person came from in europe/russia but not always. I think its true for all races to be able to tell the differences in their own race easier than distinguishing others.

That may be true for you, but I wouldn't assume that's true for others. Some of us have had the exposure to other ethnicities far more often, and thus are more perceptive when it comes to that kind of guesswork. Truthfully, Europeans to do not vary in phenotype as much as inhabitants of other continents (and I'm not talking eye/hair color) so I am not sure what is so difficult about distinguishing one Asian or Black ethnic group and another... it's as clear as night and day to me.

My husband lived in Hawaii for a little over a year. By the end of his time there, he was able to distinguish between Asian ethnic groups, because he was surrounded by it. Since then, he's sort of 'lost' the ability to.

Me, I've never been able to. I've never lived in an area with a high Asian population or a high native African population. So I understand quite well how a person might have trouble distinguishing between specific ethnic groups.

I don't even bother getting offended by movies anymore. I'm Indian, but was raised in U.A.E, and and Indians and Arabs are always unattractive 7/11 owners or terrorists, but I know that Hollywood is full of crap.

I do get irritated when people assume that I don't speak english well, or that I'm not familiar with the culture, so they treat me like I'm an idiot and talk very slowly. That just makes me want to punch them.

I think the vast majority of nationalities get put into some kind of stereotype or other.
I'm Scottish, so the "image" is a nation that drinks too much, eats unhealthily, is mean with money, eats haggis, wears kilts (all the time) and drinks whisky!

There's another stereotype for the Irish, English and Welsh, and loads more internationally.
But you can't generalise about an entire country of people (I know, some people do...)

I've yet to meet another Scot that thinks Groundskeeper Willie (typecast as a mean, perverted, kilt-wearing, haggis-eating mad man) in The Simpsons is offensive!!!
He's hilarious!

oh well, got to accept it

But I do have kind of a hard line stance on it, though many grossly misinterpret my intent (as they did on another board). I am all about human rights and protection under the law, and as far as I concerned, many proponents of amnesty (big crop companies and factories) have largely ignored this important issue. As long as illegal immigrants are being exploited the way they are now, I don't support harboring illegal immigrants. They should be deported and encouraged to apply for proper entry. It may take a while longer, but every other citizen in other non-neighboring countries have to do it that way.

I understand what you are saying, but let me just say that a lot of people don't understand the circumstances of illegal immigrants from Mexico.

Its not "it takes a little longer" the truth is, it takes A LOT of money, land, and 'aquantainces' in order for someone to be approved for a visa, let alone a workers visa.

Here in America we have poor, hungry, malnourished people and this is the world power country we are talking about! Now can you imagine how it is over there? There are a lot of towns w/o running water, they have to go to the well, and even then its not sanitary water.

My cousin who is a teacher and has her own place in Mexico has been denied a visitors visa 3 times. In the other hand my grandma who inherited a lot of land from my great grandparents, she worked 29yrs for the government got approved, and still it took 6 months.

People who leave not just their countries, but their families, EVERYTHING they know behind do it, out of desperation. They do not come with the intention of undercutting others here, they do not come w/ some sort of conspiracy to abuse government anything. They come out of desperation and trying to survive and help their families survive.

I was born in Chicago but my childhood was spent in Mexico till I was like 7-8. I went to school there and I can tell you from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE that it IS as bad as it sounds. And we were "middle class" too. Because I know the lifestyle there I know why they are here and I empathize with them. Anyone who loves their family will do ANYTHING to go to a better place. A lot of them lose their lives trying to cross the border, because its either they die at the border or they die of starvation at home, so that is why.

I wish there was still amnesties that are available for everyone. the last one for Mexicans was 1989 thats the one my mom applied (and thank God) was approved.

I just think that no one should judge anyone's actions specially if you have never been in their shoes.

OK sorry long post. I am just very passionate about this. I want to inform people that its not as easy as "oh sign up for a visa and wait a little" I wish!! i truly do, because then they wouldnt have to work such shitty jobs and endure such abuse.

Exactly, Europeans do vary in phenotypes, but when other races aren't exposed to them and shown the differences they only seem to look the same. To a trained eye you can tell alot about a person's origins.

I get highly offended when people of my own race (African American) tell me that I am not proud to be black because I "act white". Now i've been called white all my life and it doesn't bother me as much as it use to, but for someone to tell me that they think I don't like being black really crosses the line. Another issue that bothers me is when my own race criticizes me for dating out of my race. One person told me they feel like I don't think black men are good enough for me, which is not what I think at all. It's just really funny when someone thinks that they can tell you how you feel on things, but anyways....

^^ I get some of the same comments too. Unfortunately, some of the comments are from my own family members. Especially the "stop acting/talking proper" because I don't use slang words in every sentence.

As for being offended by movies/tv.. Well I'm so tired of being offended I stopped watching certain television shows and reading certain magazines.

I'm so tired of all of the stereotyping in general.

I hope i don't offend anyone when i say this but i think it's just so wrong when you are expected to act/talk a certain way because of your race. Like mentioned above by Arisone and pinkxsushii..I just think this adds more to the prejudice and racism going around; also i believe this is a form of racism in itself..

I have to say, one of the most amazing films I've ever watched was Crash.
Racial and social bigotry is paramount in this film, and it details our frail and mistaken preconceptions of who we think we are, and what we think others are.

And how very very very wrong we get it.

I once overheard a girl telling another girl that she met some other girl from Korea.

"...and she's Christian, which is very rare over there."

I tried not to say anything, but I just couldn't help myself! I spun around and asked, "Did you just say that Christianity is RARE in Korea?"

"Yes."

"It's not. It's actually one of the most commonly practiced religion there."

I bet you guys a cookie that she assumed we were all Buddhists or something. Seriously, drop off a plane in a parachute anywhere in Korea and you'll find yourself surrounded by crucifix-bearing churches.

I haven't really been offended by anything lately in movies, I think the ONLY thing that really offends me in a movie(not saying this happens a lot) is when a black guy nails a white girl just for the sake of a 'goal' I don't get it, but it really grosses me out...

The video when Triumph the insult comic dog (Conan O'brien) went to Quebec City. It was SO horribly insult, and i'm a HUGE triumph fan, and am a little obsessed with Conan.

Separatism is a really touchy subject in Canada, let alone Quebec. The fact that they did this clip while in Toronto was even more insulting. I'm not a French Quebecer, nor am i for a Quebec Libre (although i am a quebecer and proud of it!) but i was upset. I thought it portrayed all Quebecers as assholes. It happened years ago, and it still upsets me to think about it. It was just so horribly insensitive. Why would you go to another country and trudge up very sensitive political issues that are so deep routed? It was in horrible taste.

But i'll forgive conan, if he makes me redhead babiesss!

What offends me the most is when people make gay jokes, or insults something by calling it gay, around me, then are like "no offense no i don't mean anything against gay people"

if you don't have anything against them, then why is it an insult
