I can relate. When I was in my teens, I went through a phase during which I was obsessed with the notion that my eyes were "too small." So I came to the conclusion that the best eye makeup "solution" for me was very pale, extremely shiny beige cream eyeshadow applied to upper lids, with mascara but no liner.
In my bedroom, it looked fine, but in photographs you can actually see the light from the flash reflecting off my eyelids.
Fortunately, I eventually wised up and realized that my eyes are beautiful, and actually on the large side.
I still like shimmery eyeshadow, but it doesn't have to always be pale beige, and I rarely wear just one color at a time.

I never really took much interest in make up probably because I was too lazy and I couldn't get anything right. Even when I started to come out to work in the industry, I was still sorta neglecting make up also, the brand I was working for only had skin care at that time. the counter was right in front of bobbi brown's and that was the only tv there so I watched the video over and over again and learnt from there

I didn't start wearing make-up until I was 16. Ha, and at that time I really needed to pluck my brows! They were so thick and bushy! Eeeew! Anyhoo, nobody really taught me. I think I just experimented. I'm sure I was looking quite crazy at some point! When I was about 20 or so, my friend who was a MAC addict, I mean she had this huge expsensive traincase full of thousands of dollars of MAC (which somebody stole and she was PISSED!!!!) introduced me to MAC. She also, taught me alot about blending and all that. She even gave me my frist real brushes which I still have! From there, I just kepty practicing. My Mom sure didn't teach me, because she always asks me to do her brows and make-up lol. I'll be sure to teach my girls.

I was another no make-up girl! I was always interested in what my mum had- she found her stuff in my room a few times after I'd gotten it out without her knowing before I had the chance to put it back

After that..? I think she told my grandma who founded several make up schools back in Hong Kong and one in Canada about it, because I received quite a bit in terms of eyeliner and eyeshadow soon after, from her via visitors from canada lol.
Unfortunately, all the colours were browns and greens with a few purples.... and I honestly had NO idea what to do with it. So i tried to play with them... ended up breaking all the lids
lol.gif
then put them away never to be seen again.
THEN last christmas, my mother had to go over to Canada to look after my grandma who was undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer...
She decided to take me with her and put me in the care of my aunts, who are the principal and make up directors of the school over there.
So I learnt from them for three weeks, while it snowed and snowed and was freeezing outside.

I got my first MAC product ever from a friend who heard I was going to go learn about make up in Canada- It was Aquadisiac. I was horrified by the colour of it lmao. It was just soo damn... BRIGHT!
But thanks to my aunts, then finding specktra, I think I can deal with it now

And of course... I'm still learning!!!

I can totally relate to a lot of you. I had a love-hate relationship with makeup my whole life. My mother hardly ever wore makeup, so when it came to me putting anything on I was basically on my own.
When I was in Kindergarten I snuck my heels (character shoes from my dance class) and some bright orange lipstick to school for me & my best friend.
In middle school I was borderline goth so I wore liner, mascara & that wretched dark purple Wet 'n Wild lipstick & black nail polish-yeah, I was cool, right?
In high school I was a drama geek so I learned basic stage makeup & became obsessed with age makeup, but was lazy so I never wore anything but mascara.
Stopped wearing makeup all together in the beginning of college. I was too damn lazy to even get dressed for class, let alone put on makeup. And on top of that, the week that I moved to NYC (the summer after my sophomore year), my car got broken into & all of the makeup that I did have was stolen. I tried re-building up my stuff with drug-store makeup, but just wasn't feeling it.

And then I started playing in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.....that was the end of it all. Makeup became my life. Hehehe. I pretty much picked it up immediately (been doing art since 4th grade...was an art ed major in school...never had a problem with blending/color/etc), but bought a few books, got a job with MAC, and started building & improving from there. Went to MUD, but that was more for the business aspect of it all...didn't learn much about application there.

Or all of the above?

It was mostly the last two, for me.
Both my mother and my sister wore make-up, but they didn't take it that seriously.
It wasn't until I was 16 and got contact lenses that I started taking very much interest in makeup. Until then, I felt like most of my face was hidden by glasses, so I didn't bother.

Wow, I think my grandmother bought me my first makeup from a local Kmart. My mother never wore makeup and still does not wear it; and neither does my sister. My grandmother taught me a little, but I mostly learned via trial and error and seeing what was trendy in magazines (hello 1980's frosty blue eyeshadow!)

I started wearing makeup when I was in 7th grade, so I was....12. By the middle of that year, I was wearing a full face every day, and carting most of my stuff with me to school for "touch ups" in the bathroom.

I've gone from "full face" to bare minimum, and back again, and hit every point in between. Even wore no makeup for about six months at one time in my life. I still feel like I am learning new things; for example I just learned how to use a foundation brush!

I perused MUT for the last 3 or 4 months. I read just about everything and I've learned most of what I know now. All I knew about makeup was......... Wow, thinking about it now, I knew damn near nothing. I didn't know there were such things as foundation brushes!

Well as I stated, I learned tons from the ladies on MUT. It's where I learned about Specktra a month ago. I've been obsessed ever since. There are tons of pics on here and that's really important for me/a beginner to use as a reference. The tutorials are awesome. There's alot of diversity in makeup styles as well.

So, Thank you ladies!

When ma would take me school clothes shopping, she'd stop at MAC and pick up her things. I was never interested, but one day she asked me if I wanted to try a gloss. So she bought me Oh Baby lipgloss. Then the next time we went, the MA was showing her a liner and asked me if I wanted to try some too, and so my mom bought me Chestnut pencil. This was how I started. Then I slowly slipped into mascara. I never wore much more. Then in my second year of college, I got a little more into it. My now sister in law went to MAC to have her makeup done for her wedding, and while she was getting done, one of the MAs had freetime and did some playing with eyeshadow on me. So I bought Swish, Pink Venus, Sushi Flower and Aquadisiac over a matter of like 2 weeks....after that I was hooked.

Being a guy, makeup was an adventure for, one bright day I just decided that why shouldn't guys wear makeup? So I started experimenting with concealers, and loved it, and then lipstick always just to moisturize or give it some sheen, then eyelining, then bronzers, then foundation and then I was hooked before I even realized it.

Also, since I enjoyed anime a lot and enjoyed putting makeup on other people I offered myself as a MUA for cosplayers backstage before they went on stage during a small convention.

Then I decided I wanted to become a freelance MUA (at least to begin with) and took a class which did wonders for my techniques (who were very trial and error before) but I just love makeup and the power it has to change someone's look and contribute to their self-esteem.

My Mum has never worn make up so I couldn't steal any of hers to play with. I used to experiment with the freebies that came off magazines like Just 17 etc. and I think I possibly bought my first set of make up basics (lip gloss, neutral eyeshadow, mascara and powder) at the age of 14 although I only ever wore it in private because I was kinda embarassed about wanting to wear makeup at such a young age. Once I started getting oily skin in my late teens powder became a staple in my everyday routine and I remember being told off by a teacher for applying at school! My application technique still sucks at 23, but I'm trying to learn from magazines and the internet.

When I was about 7 I did a modelling course (after I asked how people in ads in magazines got there, and deciding I wanted to be in a magazine too!
lol.gif
) and of course part of the course was applying makeup, and I felt like a princess with it on. Ever since then (oh yes, I started young!) I've loved makeup. Most people think I'm way too young to love makeup so much but whatever, it makes me happy.

I learn about makeup from the internet (specktra, MUA, etc) and magazines; as well as trial and error by teaching myself.

I'm mostly self-taught. I started wearing make-up in junior high and thought that bright blue eyeshadow and blue mascara looked absolutely amazing on me! *cringes*

Then I started playing around with my friend's make-up and discovered a few combinations that really did look great on me. I stuck with the tried-and-true for years and years, with a few different looks thrown in. It's really been just the last year or so that I started seriously experimenting with it. Compared to some of you, I'm fairly new to MAC products but I definitly was hooked on my first purchase. Now it's like, "when can I go buy more make-up?".
