How do you decide, what makeup to wear?

I used to be like this...existentialist nausea caused by the endless possibility of choices!

Anyway, it seems a lot easier to decide what to wear when I realise just how many products go untouched, and how long some of them are untouched for. I separate my collection and put away all the things I know I only wear in other seasons, so now it's summer and I put away a whole bunch of 'winter' stuff.

This helps narrow down choices a bit.

I've also set aside a collection of 'special occasion' things, one of which I pulled out today (Infamous paint!).

I try to break it down by function & lighting too.

Am I going to be indoors/outdoors?
Is the natural light outdoors bright/gloomy?
Occasion? Special/work/just at home/neat casual etc.

Listing what you use each day also helps product rotation. It might sound weird, but I love compiling lists of things like that!

Hope these suggestions help. The post above me has some short-but-good ones too!

I usually base my makeup off of my mood, or accessories. If you're wearing all black, that doesn't necassarily mean that you have to wear black makeup. Try picking out a cute purse, or necklace with vibrant colors that you could match your makeup to. For example, a simple black dress accompanied by a turquoise necklace, or other accessories, is a perfect occasion to use your brighter blue eyeshadows, or your favorite glitter liner.

Sounds silly, but I rarely worry about how my make up and clothes work together. So I may wear purples (m/u) and green or blue clothing. But to make sure I use up the m/u I own, I try to plan it out. I keep 2 empty 4-pan pallettes and plan a few days m/u looks from those. Eyeshadow is what I have the most of and this works great for me. Every 4-5 days, I completely switch out the e/s in my 4-pan pallettes and think of new colour combinations.
However, I need to find a way to use my pigments more. They kind of just sit there most of the time.

I think more about what eyeshadow I'm wearing than what clothes I'm wearing. I just wear the eyeshadow I feel like wearing that day. I do try to use a different one each day. I love purples, greens, teals, any bright eyeshadows

Usually I pick out what I want to wear and then plan my makeup around it. I've had so many instances though where I'll pick out a shirt I want to wear and it ends up not fitting right. Then I end up changing my makeup. :p I hate that! Sometimes I'll go lazy and just clash with orange eyeshadow and a green shirt or something. haha

This is almost exactly what I do. Sometimes I have an idea of something I want to wear (such as something new) or just something I spontaneously think of - say a bright Cargo or Nars blush. If not, I kind of look thru my stash until something catches my eye, maybe something I've been neglecting. Then I build a look around it. That's why sometimes I put my blush on before my eye shadow, or sometimes lips first.

I have a 12-drawer unit for my stash (1st drawer: foundation, concealer, powder. 6th drawer: l/g, 9th drawer: mascara & eyeliner, etc.) For a while I was keeping commonly used items in my train case, but I realized that I was using those items over and over without digging into the drawers, so right now it is sitting empty.

I like the idea of keeping a list to rule out duplication, as I am a compulsive list maker. So I may try that, too.

Did anyone watch that ANTM epsisode where J (make-up artists) said never match your e/s to your top? I pick out the top I'm wearing and go with something different. I've never really bothered thinking about whether e/s would clash with my top, I don't think I'm bothered - do you think anyone looks that closely?
I usually where Mildew on my eyes which works out pretty well cos i don't have any green clothes.

for me - i get dressed first and then decide on what makeup to wear. my eyes usually revolve around greens or golds - so it kinda depends on my mood or if i feel that i want to use a particular colour or if i feel that i've neglected to use something - and once i pick one colour, then i'll just build up the look around it.
