In Canada, if you are a member of any of the professional unions like ACTRA (Canadian version of the SAG) or Equity you are qualified for the PPID.

With my PPID card I get 40% off. With Stila I get 40% off.

When I worked for Fields I got a measly 20% off in cosmetics then they changed it to 15% ..the cheap bastards.

I think in UK if you work for an EL Co. you get 60 or 50% all EL brands - nice huh? Maybe someone here can clarify this...I mentioned this to my exec and they shrugged it off, like she cared, she got her % off at MAC, Aveda and CCO so she didnt give a rats ass and she got whatever she wanted for free from the good ole storage closet free from the taking at the corporate offices ...so she was all set.

I know Clinique consultants get discounts at CCO's as well, they are in the computer, I think its 20%.

Geez do I sound bitter ?

Since EL is suppose to be one big company since strange everyone is treated all different, like Clinique gets things sent to them, like MAC but you get a quarterly Gratis as well, EL you dont get anything sent to you at all. It pisses people off unless of course you work for MAC or Clinique!

I applied for the card as a Fashion Stylist, and I thought only if you applied as Make-up Artist you got the full 40%.

I hope I'm wrong. lol

You are correct. :p

Consultants not sales people, were you a consultant or just a salesperson at the store ?

You have to show the CCO your EL pay check stub, if you got paid via lets say Carsons then you dont qualify.

Update on this....
I was able to get the 30% discount, but then I went back to the exact same store & another manager told me I couldn't. He said it was a mistake on the original manager's part (but I'm pretty sure the original person that rung me up was the RM & he was 3rd key, but I guess I could be wrong).

I was so angry I just walked out of the store. I could have easily gone to the pro store around the block....I had a list of about $250 of stuff that I needed, but without the discount I couldn't afford it right then.

So now, who's right in this situation?
I'm going back into the city, to the pro store, this weekend & am still waiting for my Pro Card, but am getting impatient for new MAC that I can't really afford!

Hello,
Unfortunately Freelancers do not get a discount in the US. It is for permanent employees only, considered to be part of our compensation package. You should get together some proof of being a make-up artist and apply for the PPID card. That would give you 40%.
Better than nothing. If someone says they are getting a discount of 30%, they have been lucky. They are not supposed to.

Actually it is not a definite no for freelancers in the US. It is really a regional thing. I know my store and other stores in my region do honor the freelancer discount (with a current paycheck stub and ID). I have heard that other regions do not honor the discount. It is really hit or miss.

I quit my permanent position because it was just too many hours and the schedule wasn't flexible enough to allow me to go back to school...I actually love freelancing because I have so much flexibility (and I actually get called a lot every single week).

I DID however, use that 60% discount on my last day at counter...to the tune of over $2,000...

So as a MAC freelance what did you do to get the PPID card?

I worked at the Macy's counter and got 10% off anything I bought at the counter where I worked but 60% off when I went to the freestanding store. Apparently it had something to do with when M.A.C is at a dept. store, they buy the inventory and "sell it out". So, it was a Macy's discount not M.A.C I suppose. I had a $500 a day limit though when using my employee discount.

I really would like to have a mac pro card as a m/a, but I don't have much experience. I think that if that fails, I'll just wait til I gather up more skill and apply at a store/counter for the 60% discount as well as working in a field which I love.

The idea of the 40 per cent PPID is the discount is for working freelance makeup artists - the makeup we buy for our kits is not for us and our personal use. I've got to have makeup to cover every skin tone, age and situation... from Rose McGowan white to Alex Wek black and everything in between. The company still needs to make a profit. An average trip to the Pro shop for me is usually a couple hundred dollars... and I've got a staff card, so that's after a 60 per cent discount. Wipes, disposable wands, airbrushing supplies, lipmix, mixing mediums... five blacktrack fluidliners at a go... it seriously adds up.
So, a professional qualification would be tear sheets with credit, plus a business card, or if you work in TV, a letter of employment from the station, an agency letter (lots of artists where I work have agencies) ... if you're a student taking full time makeup artistry you can get a 30 per cent discount with a letter from your school. Hope that helps...
