I know an awesome trick for getting cats to take their pills which saves all that hassle.
Wear a thick jumper. Pick up your cat so that it's facing you and 'stick' your cat to your jumper i.e. the cat will be gripping onto your jumper but you can can support it's bum if you need to. Open the cats mouth and insert pill. The cat will be too busy trying to stay attached to the jumper to be too worried about the pill. To help the pill go down, stroke the cats throat gently.
Works like a charm everytime on my cat.
