I don't think depotting is a good idea just for free lipsticks...

I did the math today while viewing the depot thread. 6 container for 1 lipstick right? so since 1 eyeshadow is 14.50, and 1 refill palette is 11, then 1 viva glam lipstick is 14. Now let's do the math:

$14.50 e/s - $11 refill = $3.50

$3.5 * 6 = $21

in which

$14 lipstick is not equal to $21!!

Seriously if you can, buy the refills. Like those make up remover, you can't avoid the container. Don't get caught up by the "free" word.

I'll play along again....

No LE MAC shadows are available in pan form. So I'm not buying them for the "container."

I depot for the convenience of being able to see all of my colors at once; not to get "free" ls. Up until March of this year, there was no counter where I live. So depotting to get a free ls was not my motivation.

And BTW, there are several threads already on this subject.....

I think you're confused or something. It's not like people are buying the shadows, depotting them, then tossing the shadows just to turn the containers in for their free lipstick/eyeshadow/etc. They are not only getting the eye shadow but a free lipstick, so really it's a profit of $14, not a loss of $21 like you seem to think it is.
Besides no one is getting "suckered in" with the word free. The lipstick/shadow/whatever really is free and really is a good deal. Sometimes there are no strings. So, breathe, and enjoy your /free/ lipstick.

I think what the OP is saying is, with permanent shades it's cheaper to buy the refills even after you've factored in the free lipstick. The only time it's best to depot is if it's a LE shade you can't get in pan form or you if can't get to a Pro store.

I thought the point of B2M was to recycle your plastic or glass to help the Earth and such, and you just happen to get some cool stuff in return *shrugs*

What a hippie way of thinking.

Yeah, that's one of the big things behind it. It's one of the only programs I can think of that not only feed the hippie-yay-planet group but also the consumerist-gimmie-gimmie people.

Also.. I might be incorrect since I buy my Mac at the Freestanding Mac store. I think Mac counters may not carry the pro palette refills so some people can only get pots unless they order online.

I was told that they use the recycling to make playground equipment and the girls always thank me for 'recycling'. I too believe it's not for the economical benefit of the freebie. Mac could change their packaging so it's very low profile but this way they can keep their product look and be responsible to the environment. Everyone wins here.

I'm sure this has been covered.. but this is my first chime in. lol

Depotting is a little fun and I get a little psyched when I get to get a freebie.

Why do I depot?

I depot because in this whole damn country there is only one MAC counter that only sells e/s in pot form, I have no means to get the pro pan refills in my country so if I want them I have to buy them from eBay or other places. Wich is a little cheaper but I may not get the excat colour I'm looking for plus I really like to see the shadow I'm buying IRL so I know exactly what I'm getting colour and formula wise.
Getting a free l/s isn't really that big of a deal to me since I use l/g more, but in here we can only get a lipstick. Also like other mentioned LE color's don't come in pan form and I like to depot those too since it saves me space.

Its also not just eyeshadows that people b2m
and I highly doubt people would buy 6 eyeshadows just to get a free lipstick
they would just spend a ton of less money and buy the lipstick.

LE shadows don't come in pro palette and people at counters cannot get pro palette.

When I b2m, its always, empty brush cleanser bottles, empty mascaras, empty makeup remover containers. Not a bunch of e/s I bought just to b2m.

I agree with the others.

I personally don't know a single person who depots "just for free lipsticks". Most that I know depot to maximize storage and only buy pots when pans aren't available (whether it's due to being an LE or out of stock.)

true. there are people who just buy Mac foundations and that's it.. though it make take some time.. they still do back to MAC.

If you can buy refill shadows, then that's more economical.

However, a lot of people don't have a freestanding or pro store available where refill palette-form shadows are offered. That's why people depot and B2M. Also, as has been said, LE shadows don't come in palette form.

only if you're a pro member can you get pans online. if you're not, you can only get them at stores or over the phone.

Just say a lipstick is $14.00 - not to nitpick, which I am doing, we can't B2M for Viva Glam, can we? It's charity.

I have so many empty containers, whether it's from brush cleaner or face cream... even the empty wipes are B2Mable. I think it's a lovely way to get rid of your empties without throwing them in the garbage!
