im glad you are adopting a cat, rather than buying. my first cat was 8 months old when i adopted her from a rescue home, she is lovely. so lovely that i adopted 2 kittens recently from a family friend who's cat had a litter.
dont just look at the kittens, there will be adult cats there who get overlooked in favour of kittens, so please dont forget them!
also, when you go, make sure you go for a friendly and outgoing kitty. my first one chose me! she jumped up onto her run door and purred and meowed at me, so i had to take her home. plus she is beautiful.
we went to the rescue place over christmas to donate some cat and kitten food to them and we saw the cats. we wanted to take all of them home!
