Laptop recs?

I need a lapop. My PC is on its last legs. I really wanted (well still kinda want) a gold Sony Vaio but my friend said that the exterior is too flimsy and not very durable. I'm yet to go and see them for myself in the flesh though.

I'd only be using it for downloading music/films, uploading pics from my camera, burning DVDs/CDs and internet browsing and I want one with a high spec and inbuilt webcam.

I'm willing to spend up to £600 (around $930).

What would you reccomend? Please post links if you can, Doesn't matter if they're on U.S sites, I'll jus search for them on UK sites to compare prices.

My step dad and I both had Dell laptops and they were the shittiest! Right now I have an HP6830s and it is cool.

^^^^^ LMAO - i was about to say Dell, cos i've never had problems with it. and i'm sticking to it.
however, i've heard good things about the macbook, and i know it's ignorant to like something based on appearance, but i think they're too cute.

LOL...we had inspirons but im not sure the kinds. Mine would just constantly shut off and overheat. I had to have it elevated all the time so it wouldnt get warm.

MSI Windbook is pretty good. They're insanely tiny, so they're extremely portable, but they don't have a CD drive. So that's a downside to that. They cost aboutttt $500.

I have a Compaq Presario F500 Widescreen (bought in UK, but it was a gift so I dont know the price, but I'm sure you could find it because of the full name) and it's awesome. I've had it for almost a year now and I'm very happy with it.

I've an Acer Aspire with wide screen and my work laptop is an older HP model (which is a piece of junk). We also use Dell at work and they're not that good laptops. I love my Acer, everyone in my family has one... lol. I think the newer HP Pavillion are pretty good.

i have a dell inspiron, and bought it out of the dell catalog for about 650? not including tax.

i haven't had any problems with it.

I don't like Macbooks

I've played with my boyf's new one a lot over Summer and it's fine for internet browsing and looks super-sexy but all the other Apple features confuse me. I like Windows!

I just bought the white Sony Vaio laptop for 650$ CAN which would be less in US money, and i really love it, its portable and really fast, im a student and its really perfect for me...
The IT guy at work highly recommended it too!!

Thanks Jenny, what spec is yours? A white one would be pretty sleek if I can't get hold of the gold ..hmmm.

Sorry i'm not very tech savy, does spec mean memory? If it does, i checked my sisters and hers is 2GB.

Specs = specifications.

E.g. memory, hard drive size/speed/type, processor type & speed, screen size, operating system, etc.
