I had an HP (not sure the model though - I purchased about a year ago) and had major problems with it...first, the fan stopped working - back under warranty, got it home 4 weeks later....then a few months after that, the CD drive went, 2nd time back under warranty...then I dropped it (totally my fault - but it was literally less than a foot i dropped it) and the screen went all weird...so now i have a useless laptop. The other big problems I had - it would overheat constantly...and the battery lasted for maybe 10 minutes when it wasn't plugged in (even the tech people at Best Buy couldn't tell me why....).

sorry, there's my rant against HP :p

I'm on a Macbook right now, and I love it. Mac's are a million times easier to use than Windows. I'm not sure how I'm feeling the new Macbook designs, though, and how they hold up.

If you want to use a PC, though, I really do recommend going to the stores and testing them out. My boyfriend and I were laptop shopping for his mother, and some of the keyboards felt cheap. You press down on one key, and the entire keyboard indents slightly.

vaio's are all about looks then actual performance. if you were to get a vaio i'd go for one in the fw or aw range... but they start at like £800 and up. you could get a ns series one however they are very basic and again expencive foir what you get.

i have much love for the dell inspiron's putrely because you can get a damn good machien for not so much money! however i wouldn't get one from pc word. they a re pre bulit and work out more expencive than if you got one from dell's uk website. plus building yourself means you get exactly what you want! for eg, i have 3gb ram, 220 hard drive and a very decent dedicated graphics card (lots are just one board graphics whihc is not very good for gaming)

For the money Acer's are very good! I've used one for work for the last 18 months and can't complain, I'm literally on EVERYDAY! In fact scrap that, I AM on it everyday! I used to have a Toshiba which cost triple the amount but that only lasted about a year!

Since your not a fan of Macbooks, although that would be my rec on what buy next, I'd def. say look into the Acers as they're a lot cheaper than Sony and just as good IMO!

Hubby gave me a Vaio for my birthday this year and I love it! I have not had any problems with it! And I am getting him one for Christmas because he can't keep his hands off of it! LOL!

get a white macbook... i know you said you don't like the interface, but you can actually run windows on a mac and it runs better and faster than on any pc... if you live close to an apple store i'm sure that anyone in there is also happy to show you how to use all the amazing stuff it comes with (like movie and photo editing) i'd say get your moneys' worth... the new white macbooks are $999
