Lipglass/Lipstick going bad

So I know a lot of you have backups of LE items & have a top of lipstick/lipglass. I usually don't keep a lot of it around because I noticed I was saving a Hard candy lipgloss and it got this nasty smell and taste. Does this ever happen to anyone's MAC lip products? I have a really old l/s that I think is starting to turn..so Im afraid to start a lipglass collection and have them go bad.....The package said 24 on the one I checked..does anyone have any older lip items that are still good?

I don't know how long you can keep it in its "new" state before it starts changing, I thought there was a thread on here somewhere about what the little icons on the packaging mean, it says 12 or 24, etc., meaning the item is good for 12 or 24 months shelf life.

Anyway, I'm sure once you start using a lipgloss, the number one factor for it turning bad is using the sponge tip applicator directly to your lips= bacteria.

I'll say one thing about Hard Candy lip products...in my experience, they go bad more quickly than almost any other brand I own. As for MAC, I recently B2M'd a bunch of my rancid Lipglasses which were from 2000 and 2001, and I'm not really sure how long they had been rancid. The oldest one I have left is Greenhouse l/g, which was made in 2002, and it still smells fine. So, basically, I give them about three years before they start getting nasty.

Well, I have a l/s from 1998 that looked and smelled perfectly fine this year (I swapped it away because it was a wretched color on me). So, that being said, I don't think there's a magic date upon which you lippies will funkify... I think it depends on a lot of factors: usage, contamination, type of storage, plus I think some batches just go bad quicker than others.... I would probably check on them after a year or two, though - just to make sure they were still worth holding on to.

I have a spite l/g from 2000 and it is still in good shape. I don't use it often, but I haven't noticed any bad taste or smell.

I try and help my lipglasses last longer by NEVER using the applicator that comes in them. I use a clean brush every time and never double dip. So far so good.

I've only had one turn funky on me, Hi-Resin Rose. I swapped for it so I don't know it's true age, but it was supposedly BN from a reputable swapper. Perhaps the packaging is a factor as well, i.e. since this was a lipglass stain in the squeeze tube. I've heard on another board people talking about their l/g stains turning faster than their other l/g in the hard tube.

I had a Spite lipglass (my first lipglass purchase) from 1997 and I finally used it all up this year and B2M'ed it. It was perfectly fine. No colour change, no weird taste, and I always used the sponge tipped applicator. You couldn't tell it was Mac anymore b/c all the writing had come off, but it seemed just fine. It might depend on where you live too. I live on the Wet Coast, and it never gets super hot here. The heat probably makes products go off faster.

the shelf life dates generally indicate life after the start of usage.

The lipglass stains in the tubes definitely seem to go bad relatively quickly - smells like crayons

koolkatz, I totally agree with you. I bought a set of mini lipglass stains (5 in a box set) and they turned bad after 2-3 years.

I have lipglasses which are about as old, but are still good texture and smell.

Where, on the packaging, would I find those numbers? I don't see 'em on my lipglass or lip conditioner packages.

On the side next to the recycle icon ^_^ Not on everything though. I don't think they put it on lip stuff because gerenally you use it up within 2-3 years??

That's true, not all items have it.

The Skinfinishes are only good for TWO YEARS ... yikes ... I will never use my three in that amount of time.

But thats the beauty of powder products,..it may say two years but I bet they last way longer,.. I have had quite a few specialty face powders for quite a few years like my Guerlain Meteorites and they don't smell and are still the same quality as when I bought them (has it really been more than 4 years now?) and I keep those puppies in a cordial glass in the open air,... I think if you make sure that you use a clean brush and are very careful about keeping the powder dry it will last longer than any given expiration date,....
