I think Ulta is a more everyday beauty choice. Sephora is more upscale and cutting edge, not run of the mill. Like for example, Ulta sells drugstore brands but without the drugstore environment, in shopping centers with supermarkets, targets and book stores. They have everything, with high end, like Urban Decay, Too Faced mixed in. i think that is how they pull people in. Sephora high end, upscale and in shopping malls that many people don't get to.
Ulta also has tools Sephora doesn't carry, and weekly coupons, salon services, and salon products that Sephora isn't offering right now. Not to digress too much, i find this subject matter interesting... and I totally get why Ulta is doing so much better.
