Macy's closing stores.....

I worked for Estee Lauder at a Hecht's Department store. After about a year they were bought out by Macy's and fired our entire department under the guise of "causing shortages by using coupons" (which apparently Macy's doesn't allow employees to do) - they escorted us all out of the building by security. It was humiliating and completely uncalled for - they sent us the coupons with the statements for our Employee Cards. They made us pay the money back we saved on the coupons and then hired people at the counter for less then $6.50 an hour.

Do not underestimate how hard Macy's will screw you to make money, even though you work for MAC. And if something like that happens, MAC will not be able to place you somewhere else.

So, just a warning to Macy's employees... you might try looking for another job somewhere else, just in case.

Would we be placed at another MAC location or would we be out of a job like all the other Macy's employees? Does anyone know?

If there is another MAC location in your area you they will change your location. When Parisian's closed in my city MAC split the artists up between the two macy's counters so they were taken care of. So MAC will take care of you

i'm not sure about MAC but i know that macy's employees working in locations that are closing are going to be considered first for available positions at other macy's near them. i HOPE MAC would do the same but i don't know how they work.
i know right now tho, the only macy's in florida that's closing is a location in west palm and they haven't even announced the clearance sale yet.

Holy crap! That is all kinds of shady. How soon after the buyout did they do this? Did you have to pay Macy's or Hechts? Either way, I don't see how they got away with that if using coupons was within Hecht's policy. Sorry to go off topic, that just blew my mind.

Nyla, I don't know what they would do. MAC is doing things to save $ themselves so I don't know if they would even have enough hours to cover all of those employees at other counters. I guess it would depend on how business was doing in those areas. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya girl!

Oh, edited to add that this is just a guess!

I had to make a "Restitution Payment" to macy's. Hecht's policy always allowed employees to use coupons, and Macy's did not. However, Macy's never bothered to train or distribute employee policy manuals to all previous employees... so, when a new girl came in and had training that "Using coupons creates a shortage" and she mentioned it to security, she got a $400 bonus and they fired every single person in my counter. All 7 people. Less than a week before Christmas. Most humiliating thing in my life, being made to walk out of that store with my hands behind my back like a thief.

I will never give ANY Macy's any of my money ever again for that.

This is shocking. I surprised that this was even legal?

I'm so sorry that happened to you.

Thanks for the sympathy. I don't know if it was legal but I didn't have a lawyer or enough money for one at the time... I doubt that it was, to be honest, but suing your former employer doesn't make it easy to get another job.

i'm from kansas city and it was called jones when i worked there and when i quit working for them these bastards sent me a bill for $98 (this was back in 2004 before macy's took over) which was a total of the discounts i had received while working there.....
they basically told me that when i stopped working for them i have to pay back whatever discount i got. i told them to f*ck off and that it's ridiculous and that they were indian givers. lol!
they dropped it because i raised so much hell about it but they never specified that to me while in the hiring process so they basically just tried to make me pay them $98 for the clothes on my back.
f*ck that.....
