Matching Cosmetics to Clothing

Hi everyone!! Not sure if this is the right place to post this, or if it has been posted before, but I searched and didn't see anything.

So I was at the hair salon yesterday, and while the hairdye was seeping in, I was listening to this other girl talking to the hairdressers about how she likes to match her make-up to whatever it is she's wearing, and they completely shot her down. They were just, like, "What are you thinking? Never do that!" And I could see she was pretty embarassed.

But I was thinking later on, what's the big deal about matching eyeshadow to clothing? I know it's considered a faux-pas and you should choose complementary colours instead, but I have been known to match make-up every now and then. I honestly don't understand why it's such a big deal to match (I just know you "shouldn't" but not why you "shouldn't"). I was just wondering what everyone else's opinion on this is, since personally, make-up for me is something I do because I enjoy it, not because I want to follow all the rules and do it the way everyone else says is proper. So no matter what is said here, I'm going to keep doing it if I want to, but I just wanted to know what you all think, and if you're a rule-breaker like me too

. Thanks!!

I love matching my makeup to what I'm wearing! I get compliments for it too so I know I'm not the only one that thinks it looks good. I never listen when other people say you should never do that because it's my face and I'm gonna wear whatever color I want to on it!

i do the same thing at times but i also mix in other colors that i know will compliment with what i am trying to match my clothing too. for instance i went to a baby shower a few weeks ago and i wore a pale yellow blouse. the eyeshadows that i chose were a warm golden yellow and a dark rose. they blended well together and i got lots of compliments on it.

Hi.
I thinks it depends on what you are wearing and on the type of colouring you have. Like when you're wearing bright blue and bright blue e/s to match, I think it doesn't look very nice. But if you wear a beige or brown top, why not wear e/s in neutral tones with it? To me make-up is an individual thing... so I think the rules are more like guidelines anyway.

this may sound sad but the way i pick my make-up for the day is actually based on what i'm wearing. i love matching my clothes and my mu and never understood why it was so taboo. actually i think it looks bad when you have on one color outfit and your makeup is so drastically different. it's like going out w/ shoes that don't match....it throws off the look imho. even if i have a bright pink shirt on i wear bright pink makeup either shades of pink or pink mixed w/ purple or green. may be taboo but i like it and mu is all about having fun...so to each her own.

I used to be one of those people that NEVER matched my eye makeup to my clothing, but lately I've noticed I have started doing it more.

I don't match colours exactly but if i'm wearing a blue shirt, i will pick shades of blue eyeshadow that don't match exactly, but work with the colour shirt i'm wearing - so it may be darker blue shadow, but it's in the same tonal family (if that makes any sense!).

Like today I am wearing a kelly green top, and i do have green eyeshadow to match, but i made it darker by putting the shadow over a base of blacktrack fluidline.

I've started to think it having your eye makeup 'match' can help tie the whole look together.

Yeah I agree, I match my makeup to my clothing with my eyeshadow by at least keeping in it in the same color family. I try to anymore some clothes I just have to pick a different color.

I come on specktra when I am looking for a good combo to wear for the day. Some gals get inspired from flowers and sunsets, nature, etc...I try to use that as inspiration and ideas to help me think of combos for the day.

I agree 100% with what you ladies are saying...I do it so often, but I usually do like you guys have said, like keeping the make-up in the same tonal family and such, and adding another eyeshadow colour to the colour that matches. I've always just done whatever I feel like doing when it comes to make-up, as a sort of self-expression thing, but after hearing the way they beat that poor girl down at the salon yesterday, I felt like such a fashion disaster. Though I would have continued to be a fashion disaster if I wanted to anyway, I just wanted to hear everyone else's opinion. I'm glad you all feel the same way I do! Thanks for the replies!

I agree, I do the same exact thing! If my top is bold, I go for a subtle eye and vice versa. Keeping in the same family of course!

I match my eyeshadow to what I am wearing nearly every day and I don't care what anyone has to say about it either

Actually I've never heard of it being a faux pas.

Those stupid old rules really irk me.. No white shoes after labour day or something like that hehe. Some rules are just begging to be broken. Who makes up those rules anyways? I love to play with matching colours and mix things up too. As long as it looks good and you feel happy with your look then that is all that matters.

if the matching shades work then it can tie the whole look together. if the complementary shades work on you then it can also tie it in together (especially if you are wearing accessories in that complementary colour).

it just depends on what colours suit you and work together on you. everyone's skin, hair and eyes are different, so it's about finding that balance.

(oh yeah, and the next time an MA picks out a brick red lippie, orange blush, orange-y lipgloss or peach eyeshadow for me because i have red hair i think i'll puke. i don't want my entire face to match my hair.)

I've never understood that "rule," either, but I damn sure don't follow it. To me, it's kinda dumb not to match eye shadow with your clothes. Complementary colors probably work well, but I like to wear exact matches sometimes, too. Then again, I suppose I'm an eye shadow rebel because I have blue eyes, and I *love* wearing blue shadows and liners - another "faux pas," apparently. I wear what I like, and if it doesn't look absolutely HORRIBLE on me, hey... why shouldn't I?

That poor girl in the salon! Next time, pipe in and say, "Hey... I do that, and I think it's cool."

If you're wearing a bright green top, I don't know if I'd wear bright green eye makeup. Maybe wear green but a different shade?

I think it's all about balance.

Sometimes I will match or coordinate with my outfit. I like to match a piece of jewelry or pick up a color in a print. One of my favorite looks is this breezy white expensive looking tank and a gold necklace w/ a turquoise horn. I do my eyes to match the turquoise in the necklace. It really all depends on how I'm feeling that day, what I'm wearing, or what's gonna make me happy.

Furthermore, I would be extremely offended if I was the paying customer and the staff embarrassed me like that.

Well, i usually wear black sooo, i never match my shadow to my clothes haha.

No but seriously, I used to hate when people matched their shadow to their clothes, i thought it was so tacky. But i've been doing it lately!

I agree, at the time, I was so glad it wasn't me (especially since I had been wearing make-up that matched my clothing at that very moment, haha), but then I was thinking later, what kind of business of ANY kind embarasses their customers like that, especially in front of other customers? I don't usually go to that salon, I only went there because my regular hairdresser is out of town for a few weeks and I was desperate, and a friend suggested that place. I mean, I have a feeling they were trying to help, but they could have done it in a much less humiliating way. I doubt I would go back there even if I didn't usually go to a different salon, not a good first experience.
