Isn't Nars owned by Shiseido? I mean, Shiseido already sells in China and Nars was their only "independent" brand left that was still "cruelty-free" that had yet ventured off to sell in China. It doesn't surprise me at all that they'd make the decision to sell in China, after all, business interests such as expansion and revenue are always the first priority in every company. I guess it's in the same loop as MAC and a few European brands that are in the gray area of knowing that animal testing is wrong, yet prefer to expand business opportunities for the sake of brand awareness, financial gains, and gather a new following. It won't stop people from buying their products. It may be disappointing for some of course and I can't blame some people who "lost" an "iconic" brand for straying out of their original standards, but I don't think it should get the lynch mob treatment because real talk, how many people really did knew that Nars was cruelty free? They really kept it quiet for a long time tbh.
I was going to post in the deleted thread to the user who contradicted herself about a brand that pulled out from selling in China for financial reasons, but I'll post it here instead. Urban Decay was the brand that pulled out of China but it wasn't for financial reasons like they originally stated. The real reason was because they couldn't take the heat from their disappointed die-hard fans due to it being a sudden decision and felt like a big slap in the face for many long-term customers that a brand that always took pride in being cruelty-free and even offering vegan options would sell out that way. With that they started loosing revenue really fast and their brand recognition was on shaky ground because they underestimated the backlash they'd receive, thus going for the financial reasons excuse. It all worked out in the end for UD, but the damage was done for the hardcore "cruelty-free" fans.
