Petition to bring Siberia back!
Oslo definitely leans more pink. It's a shame Siberia's gone, given not everyone who is pale/fair-skinned has a pink undertone. I'd probably want either Mont Blanc or Gobi as well.
Hi Guys! New member to Spektra here--although I definitely used the forum plenty of times in the past when researching product. Please don’t hate me for taking this long to join!
This particular thread I’ve been checking periodically since I first caught word of the NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation in Fall 2017. Why? Well here’s a little background:
I am pale, and I mean startlingly so. In my teens I baked away that pale in a tanning bed (still kicking myself for that), later turning to self-tanners. In part, it was because it was so dang hard to find any face products that matched me. At the time, I wasn’t as into makeup, and between the big brands at the drugstore and the handful I knew at Sephora and Nordstrom, there wasn’t anything pale enough.
Eventually I got some sense into me, ditched the fake tan, and embraced the milky-white skin I was born with. The problem is that there isn’t a drop of pink in my undertone. I’m extremely fair, but also absolutely neutral, and absolutely olive. I’m not yellow, I’m not beige, and I sure as hell am not the pastel washed out pepto pink that so many cosmetic companies churn out, slap a label on, and market as their fairest shade (of foundation, but also concealer/powder/you name it base product).
We all know there has been quite a bit of buzz in the cosmetics industry and amongst beauty influencers about inclusivity in face/base products. Now I have five adopted siblings, and three of them are girls (think Angelina Jolie, except we’re just regular people). Do you know how frustrating it is to go makeup shopping with your sisters and feel like you can’t get excited about the same new foundation launch because one brand is just for women of color, and one brand has only five shades (of let’s face it, basically variations on Barbie’s plastic rendition of Caucasian--which, by the way, not only excludes my dear sisters but also pale AF girls like me?!?).
Being a new member, idk how to include my details below, so I’ll list them here:
I have combo skin, oily T-zone, struggle with those pesky cystic breakouts from time to time (where was the acne when I was a teen and everyone had it and no one cared?!). I’m in my late 20s, so lines are starting to be an issue as well as crepey under eyes.
As far as products…
- NARS Sheer Glow in Siberia -- it’s the best match I’ve found, EVER, making it my absolute holy grail foundation (and has been for years).
Re: the “yellow issue:” Siberia, left to dry (oxidize/whatever you want to call it) in a thick layer, does turn quite yellow. However, buffed into the skin like any other foundation it is near perfect, in the Sheer Glow formula, for those with my skin tone.
*As an aside--if we’re talking about the NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation (in the frosted glass bottle), in the shade Siberia--it is, 100%, without a doubt, SUPER YELLOW. (In case you’re wondering, this foundation reminds me of the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r, but in all the wrong ways--it comes off cakey and powdery, like it’s sitting on top of the skin. Further, products put on top--concealer, etc--move and “erase” the foundation. I hate it).
- MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NW10 -- the first foundation that ever seemed to match me; however I rarely use it these days. Swatching to compare to my other favorites, it looks like like a pale peach undereye corrector than a suitable foundation shade.
- Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation in 100 -- God Bless Rihanna for making waves of seismic levels by dropping 40 shades. I commend and respect her including a selection that matches everyone from my pale a$$ to my Cameroonian sister-in-law. The shade is only the tiniest bit too peach for me, and I prefer a formula that isn’t so powdery, but those are the only reasons that keep me from using it more often.
- Tarte Shape Tape Concealer in Fair -- my HG concealer since its release (well since it’s release and multiple restocks and I could finally get my hands on it).
- MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NW15 -- too dark/peachy, but it was a first love (along with the MAC foundation listed above) so I keep it around and make it work from time to time.
- NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer and Soft Matte Complete Concealer, both in Light 1 Chantilly -- the Soft Matte is my go to for spot concealing blemishes, and I use the Radiant Creamy for the darkest hollowed parts of my undereyes from time to time. Wish NARS had their concealers in shades that matched their foundations for spot concealing though.
- For powder, I switch between MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Light (long time fave) and CoverGirl Advanced Radiance Pressed Powder in 105 Ivory (great especially for light bake under the eyes; though shade 105 is very hard to find and I HATE the undated cheesy solid purple plastic compact it now comes in with a PASSION).
At this point, I’ve tried nearly every brand of foundation--only to find that no one seems to think anyone pale is not only the neutral olive tone I happen to be, but not warm either. They are all PINK. I’ve even tried a lot of K-beauty, J-beauty, etc--even those brands aren’t fair enough. The beauty world has seen an explosion of foundation and base product launches in the past year and none of them have anything near fair enough. Even the light pink/peach beige they call their fairest shade isn’t fair enough, undertone aside. Which is why I was so freaking excited that NARS had a new foundation coming out. I mean I refreshed and refreshed the day it came out, just itching to scoop up this fabulous foundation, finally in my shade. And then…. No Siberia.
Not only does the Radiant Longwear NOT come in Siberia, but the THREE LIGHTEST SHADES ARE ALL PINK/PEACH.
You have Oslo -- “fair with pink undertones”
You have Mont Blanc -- “light with pink undertones”
You have Yukon -- “light with peach undertones”
And finally, you have Gobi -- “light with yellow undertones” -- the fourth lightest shade is the lightest shade without a trace of pink/beige/peach that looks like someone mixed foundation and pepto and painted it all over my face. Not that Gobi is anywhere near fair enough.
To say I was pissed was an understatement. That is, until I heard word from some underground forum that they were expanding the shade range sometime soon in the spring. Oh really?
Okay. Now the reason why I finally broke down and became a member, why I’m giving you all this nauseatingly long post (sorry!), is because I finally asked NARS customer service directly when in the heck they were adding Siberia to the beloved Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation range.
Samantha, this isn’t against you. But it is against whomever decided to nix Siberia. I applaud your move towards inclusivity, NARS, although I always thought you were one of the better brands with shade range. But please, don’t forget about those of us who are at the other end of the spectrum.
And to those of you who love Siberia, and are just as pissed as me. Please, join me and express your disappointment to NARS.
P.S. Mont Blanc is pink in real life. On someone who is a true neutral olive fair, it's pink. Pepto pink.
