i once had an internet forum.....but that was a long time ago.anyhow, we had great devil and death smileys. i recall one that was my personal favorite....a smiley in a guillotine getting beheaded and blood squirting all over.

Well I couldn't find a snowflake or a pumpkin in my smilie program. Hows this though?

Specifically addressed to Neophyte...while I hate emoticons myself (quite a lot, actually), one really ought to remember that this is becoming part of online discourse. I use them because they help to ensure what you type/say is not read as being as harsh/rude as it could be. It's not like when you're talking to someone, say a friend and they say "kiss my arse" - most likely, by seeing their facial expression you can tell if they're being rude or just joking around roughly.

Seems pretty bloody obvious to me why they're used; more so why they're overused. Most people probably communicate online because they're so bloody sick of being read the wrong way in real life, where most people are just arseholes anyway.

In fact, I'm guessing the tone of my post must seem rude...note the lack of emoticons used?
