You're all right now that I think more about it. But for some reason, it still seems kind of unbelievable for me to think that something like a beanie baby could actually brighten up a child's life. I don't know why but it's just difficult for me to believe that. Which is why I stated before that they needed necessities that's more useful for them.

Toys have an amazing effect on children. I'm not sure how much they can grasp their situation, first of all. The adults know their reality well, but I'm not sure if the children do entirely. Secondly, a toy can provide an escape of their situations. Imagination is a powerful tool and can be wonderful when you're living in such tragic situations. It's a coping mechanism if anything.

They certainly do need the basic means of survival, but I believe this effort is wonderful. I think most people can do both; give a few bucks to a good charity and donate their old stuffed animals.

And their delivering them personally, but are they affiliated with any organization? A church, perhaps?

Things like that don't bring happiness to people who are suffering from sicknesses/AIDS/etc. What they need is medicine, food, shelter, clothing, other necessities.

You do have a point, and anyone who is familiar with Maslow's hierarchy of needs knows it too. If you are hungry, extremely sick, etc., there is no way that you can enjoy anything.

I want to point out that simply because they are in Africa, it does not mean that they are starving, need clothing, etc. She said that they have AIDS, so these children in particular may have the needs on the first level of the hierarchy of needs met, and the second- safety and security I believe.

I flipping hate it when people just say "Africa", okay... where in Africa, not every part is impoverished; every part has different needs just like here in the western hemisphere.

Cool, I have a few good friends from Johannesburg. I must say, those pictures are refreshing. They rarely show us pictures of happy children.
