Portfolio/Application

Some questions about a portfolio (to anyone who has submitted them, or knows what to submit): Should the pictures of the women in your portfolio of them made up naturally, creatively, or a mix of both? Also, should I do before/afters, or just the pic of the makeup done afterward. I was thinking of putting together a portfolio (all the girls in my dorm are dying for me to do their makeup anyway, lol), and was thinking before and afters might be cool. Do you think that is a silly/bad idea?

Also, I know MAC looks for retail experience. Is it a must? I’d rather not have to get a job in retail before applying, but I will if I must. I worked as a grocery store cashier for two years in high school, and while it’s not technically retail (no pushing products), a TON of customer service was involved. I dealt with people every second on the job, and trust me, it’s not easy keeping everyone happy when someone has 17 items in the 15 item and less line. It takes some people skills! LOL What do you all think, would that be enough, or should I look for retail positions first?

About a resume: Are they necessary? Does MAC look down on you if you don’t have one? What are they looking for in your resume? What kinds of skills/experience should I emphasize?

Thanks for all you’re help you guys. I know I’m asking for a lot of info. Any little bit helps however

I would say both b/c it shows you versatility. Don't forget that MAC goes from natrual loks to Halloween looks.

Definitely give some before and after shots - not too many though.

Also, check if your counter requires a portfolio - mine didn't nor did they have applications.

I'll quote shabdebaz in this thread (http://specktra.net/forum/showthread.php?t=35669)
"I've mentioned this before in some post a while ago, that MAC looks for a bunch of different things when hiring a candidate. I had very little retail experience but quite a bit of customer service experience...I was in healthcare for a long time. So, in the interview, I emphasized my customer service skills. Also, you have to be very enthusiastic, professional, trendy and passionate about makeup artistry. I ended up getting the job."

I always submitt a resume no matter what - application or not. There are many tutorials for writing them online. But you absicaly include you education, volunteer works, experience (other courses), references and an introductory letter elaborating on some of the main points andin this case, why you're applying at MAC.
