So I was making my "MAC Wants" list for the fallowing month- to buget my money... and I was looking at all the BEAUTIFUL reds and deep dark colors and pretty dark pinks (like girl about town).... and I just got SO upset because i look like CRAP with dark colors on my lips.. I have to wear sheer or light colors (like myth and stuff...)... does anyone else have this problem??? Because its the worst thing ever!!!! Ugh.... My lips are just sooo small that it loks like this blob of color on my face and nooooootttt good at all.. Its sad I cant get all those beautiful shades! =(

I'm sure you can still wear darker colors! You don't always have to stick to nudes & lighter colors.

Have you ever tried a lip liner before? That can help give the illusion of bigger lips and it can be done in a subtle way that's not overkill.

When I used to be afraid of darker lip colors, I would still buy one anyway and just lightly blot it on my lips or just a slight swipe, something sheer. I would wear reds like that, very lightly applied & with a gloss so it was easier for me to wear. Eventually, I got the hang of it and was able to wear darker lips!

Maybe I'll try that- whats a good color that you recommend for someone who has dark brown hair and is an NC400 in Hyper Real foundation? I also have blue eyes... I guess you can see by my picture in my siggy.. HAHA. Ugh i just am so depressed looking at the pretty colors!

I can't really wear darker lipsticks either. I am super pale and they make me look incredibly washed out. I've tried and tried but I just cannot make a dark lipstick look good on me.

New York apple would be nice.

Lipliner will help but don't go way over because it will probably be obvious. I'd suggest highlighting your cupid's bow too to make them look fuller.

I definitely have this problem, I love buying reds and pinks but they look horrid on me. I am the opposite in that I've got big lips, but no defined lines so it just looks all muddy on me. I've tried a lipliner also many times but doesn't seem to help because I am horrid at lining my lips...but lipglasses especially the CoC colors are seemingly working for me at the moment.

Gloss will help, too, since it reflects light and make lips look larger.

And, if you find lipstick really washes you out, add blush.

I have the same problem.. But I'm like a NW15, very cool-toned. I have NEVER found a red that was kind to me, haha.. I wanted to try Port Red because I heard it was flattering on lots of skin tones but I'm afraid it might be too warm/yellow-based for me.

I do want to try some darker colors for fall, but many just make me look sallow or completely washed out. Perhaps I should try a stain first before I commit to an actual lipstick color..?

I had this dilemma going into summer too! I bought High 90's Slimshine thinking it would be a cute, summery coral red color, and I saw looks online from girls with similar skintone as me and thought I would like it... I was being adventurous.. and guess how many times I've actually worn the shade. Yeah, once.

Ugh funny because i did the SAME thing- I thought it would look SO good on my dark tanned skin- nope.. made me look like a clown. It has to be the shape of my lips or something-- its so annoying...

Im thinking about trying a red too... im going to look at new york apple like a previous poster said-... geeze i just dont know- its so depressing! =(

This is what I've done for myself, as well. Start by using the l/s as a stain with a bit of gloss and ease your way into wearing the color darker. You'll be wearing vampy lips in no time! And I'm a gloss-aholic, so I rarely ever wear l/s without adding a gloss on top. To me, gloss eliminates the harshness that darker lips can give off.

I have a fear of dark lips too. My lips are small and when I try to wear dark colors it makes them look even smaller. Girl About Town is one offender.

I will definitely try these tips though!

Edit: This thread inspired me to try on my Girl About Town so I'd like to add a tip!

I've found that a lip plumping gloss does wonders! I used a peachy/nude colored gloss over GAT and it looks lucious!

Ditto - it's like you read my mind or something - I'm NW15 too... purchased High 90's thinking i'd be daring and sure if I had the confidence I'd pull it off... nope - and I didn't learn my lesson there... I then brough impassioned... It looks horrible on me... even when I have natural eyes it just looks so very wrong (yes, I know it's out there - but on me it's in a bad way

i'm the opposite! i don't wear darker shades because my lips are big and i worry they'll overtake my face lol!! we should make a resolution to try it and see, regardless of our preconceptions about ourselves.

I'm an N15 and dark colours also make my lips look tiny.

i say to hell with it and wear them when i want to. i tend not to do it too often only because i can't be bothered maintaining them throughout the day

You are dark like me. Do you tan btw?

I was afraid of dark lips too. I used to be an NC42 and I ADORED Lychee Luxe lipglass. It's this really pretty coraly/pink color, looks really bright & pretty on those with a tan. However, I liked to wear it over darker lipcolors so my lips looked darker. Another color that I liked wearing is by Nars, a lipgloss called Scandal. It looks bright red in the tube, but actually goes on lighter.

Have you ever tried any of the Viva Glam colors? They are all so gorgeous, my favorites are Viva Glam V & VI. I wouldn't say they are on the dark side, but they would look good on anyone. Of course you can play them up to look darker.

I am pale (about nw15), and I love how dark lips look on others, but not so much on me. Because I am pale, and my lips are large, I feel like it's just too much for me. Maybe if I had more confidence I could rock it better.

Anyways, I would try Clinique's Black Honey lipstick. Not MAC, I know, but it's a great shade and you can wear it lightly as a stain or make it more intense.
