Starting college, any tips?

Everyone has given really good advice, my advice would be to be open and friendly with your classmates. Don't underestimate the value of a study group, i was never a part of any formal one but I made friends with some girls in my glasses my 3rd year and my grades improved drastically. It really helps to have people to compare notes with, and since everyone learns differently some of us would understand different topics better.

Since you are going into science and technology it is WAY going to be about memorization in your first couple semesters especially. So start studying at the beginning of the semester do not procrastinate. Cramming, is not good. Exam time should be about reviewing stuff that you already know and understand and just securing the details... School is SO much easier if you take it seriously the whole year!

If you can get your hands on sample-exams, do it. At my school the professors would often put them at the library on reserve and you could photocopy them, nowadays they probably have them online. Sometimes they clue you in to the things that are important... ex one class I took, I can't even remember it was called (but it was about Human Genetics... ) I never would have thought that memorizing the amino acid sequence of a section of the protein we were talking about was important... I looked at the sample exam, and saw a question and ended up memorizing all those little sequences... there was a question like that on our mid term. If they give you sample exams its for a reason.

Go to your Tutorials, its a must, I never got why they had them until I started going in my third year. There are things that you will learn that the professor won't feel the need to explain in class. Talk to people in your major, try and find out which Teaching Assistants are helpful. I was truly blessed to have the T.A.'s that I did in most of my lab classes. People who actually cared and really helped you understand what was going on. Ask questions.

Hope you do well, and while I'll recommend not spending a lot of time online, if you need to vent or feel like updating I'm sure we'll all be here to listen

I seriously disagree witha previous poster, sororities and the greek system as a whole can help you out tremedously. I don't know if your community college has them (the ones here do) but when I was going to my university I joined a sorority and they not only helped me transition to college life alot quicker but it was also a support system that would always be there for me. Other added bonuses were test files and the ability to talk to other girls and upperclassmen about classes and instructors, our awesome house mother, living in a greek house is alot cheaper then living in the dorms and did I mention my life time friends (even though I don't belong to the university anymore, I'm still a memeber of the national sorority).

/end soapbox

But all in all, I do suggest atleast going thru a recruitment if your school does have it, you'll be plesently surprised.

Edit edit edit: I do not drink, and alot of my fellow sisters did not drink. Greek life =/= parties and getting drunk. Someones been watching too much animal house.

Nope. Just been watching real life. The fratholes and sororiwhores that ended up starting all over again watched too much animal house however. Glad you're an exception though.

Yes, but you're going to find those types of people in and out of the greek system.

OP, keep an open mind.

Even if you do decide to go through rush and don't pick a house, it's still a good experience and you can meet friends through just doing that. And if you do choose a house, even better.

That's all I'll say though.
