Stuck in a color rut!

I'm exactly the same way! I love neutrals, and I'm afraid to wear color unless I'm going out. Something I've found to work a little color in my eyes is to do a small burst of color on the inner corners. My favorite colors to do this are from the Take Wings quad (from 2006...LOVELY fuschia color) and with the Tempting quad from Cult of Cherry. I do a little of the green in the inner corner, blend that in with the tempting, and use the darker color on the outside. It's still smokey, but the pop of color makes it look great, and since you're using such a small amount, it can be easy to overlook. Pigments can also be good to add color..since they *can* go on sheer and have the different color undertones, they can add pops of color. I love to use Blonde's Gold of Jardin Aires (both are neutral, I know) but they seem to change the color of the shadow under them.

In response to your blending...I haven't had good luck with MAC paintpots or paints. Have you tried Lemon Aid by BeneFit? I'm absolutely in love with this stuff..it's my favorite base, even over UDPP. It's super creamy and great for blending. A couple of good eyeliner brushes are MAC 209 and the angled liner brush from Sonya Kashuk from Target.

I hope this helps!

I use a darker/brighter/non-neutral color in the corner/outer part of my eyes.

Also, I think darker, closer to black colors are easier to digest, like forest greens or navy blues.

Once again, thank you all for the support/advice/comments on how to wear brighter, more colorful looks!

I was thinking of purchasing a few darker, but colored eyeshadows like Plumage & Nehru.

I have both of these colors, and they're great. Plumage is absolutely gorgeous. I like Nehru more than Carbon as actual eyeshadow because of the glitter to it. Plumage looks great with browns, in my opinion. It's blue enough for color, but looks great in the outer V as a pop of color. It also makes a GREAT eyeliner.

I used to be exactly like you. Plain neutrals every single day (partly cause I work in a very professional company - most of the girls here don't even put on makeup!). Then I started to introduce colors into my looks by using colors in darker shades. Now, I'll definitely wear colors during weekends. Colors are fun to play with. Don't ever get discouraged cause the first look doesn't work out. After a few tries, you'll be a pro.

Try Humid (darker green). It's absolutely gorgeous!

Good luck! ~hugs~

Nehru is fantastic for a smoky eye and I'be been thinking of getting Plumage too.

This is what I did with Nehru, Print and Shroom. It looked a more blueish IRL, it's just so hard to capture the colour..

My advice for a bright look:

  • start by applying your base (bare study is great!) with the 239 shading brush.
  • apply a medium bluey or greeney colour (not a pigment, tho, freshwater e/s looks great or electra) in the corner v of the eye with the same brush, only a small amount!
  • Take the 224 brush (which is incidentally my favorite and imo the best for blending!) and in small circular motions blend along edges
  • then take the same brush (without blue e/s on it) and apply wedge e/s or soba e/s or cork e/s in crease of the eye and blend softly... this should help the blue look less 'harsh'
  • then apply a light colour on the inner corner of the eye (near tear bit) with 219 brush or a smaller brush
  • Apply pigment on top (small amount) with 224 brush and blend
  • Add some eyeliner like bootblack or point black and flick out using the angle brush
  • Mascara!
  • Highlight under brow bone
  • Add a little freshwater in corner of bottom lash line too!
