I'll give you some tattooing advice before you go, since it sounds like it'll be awhile.
I don't know your line of work, but that should go into placement. I have three tattoos (two on ankles, one around the waist), and if you're in a line of work that's more conservative, make sure you're going to be able to cover it and cover it well. A bulky bracelet or thick watchband could work. I know you want to see the reminder, but you should also factor in practical stuff, too.
Tattoos vary in pain. I'm not going to lie to you. They can and do hurt. Women have a higher pain tolerance than men, so you should be okay (all my artists told me this.) Depending on your pain tolerance, it may feel like nothing, it may hurt a lot. I've known people with zero pain tolerance survive huge tattoos. The key for me is to divert my mind and to remember that the pain is temporary.
Look at the artist's portfolio before you get inked. It's critical.
Cost doesn't always equal quality. Some people are really overhyped and there are some cheap gems. But don't cut corners if you don't like the work.
www.bmezine.com. They have lots of tattoo stories and pics to look at.
When you do get inked, follow the artist's tips and take good care of your tattoo so it doesn't look crappy later.
