I was gonna say wrist. It will hurt, no doubt, but it won't take long...10 minutes or less for such a tiny tattoo! If you wanted it in a less conspicuous area, you could put it on your shoulder blade, or perhaps on your chest, over your heart.

A tattoo like this would be a wonderful tribute to your father. Good luck!

I also vote wrist. That's where I got my first one. Since it will be your first it's harder to gauge the pain. According to my friend that does my tats it's one of the worst spots. I have both insides of my wrists done at this point and I didn't think the pain was bad but I have an abnormally high tolerance for pain.
I think it's a good sport for lots of people because with a thick banded watch you can cover it right up

Plus like Medusalox said, with something that small it will be done really fast.
Make you sure find the right artist. The wrong person can mess up the simplest of tattoos.

That reminded me- make sure you specifically ask the artist for a portfolio of scriptwork and lettering. It may be small and simple, but it's easy to screw up...get someone who has a LOT of practice doing it!

A good artist will be able to whip out a huge portfolio of past work.

That's a really sweet thing to do, I think it's a wonderful idea.

Honestly, getting a tattoo feels like being scratched by a cat. It hurts, but it's totally bearable.

You know where I'd get it, if I were you? The back of my neck. It's inconspicuous, and that's a fleshy area, so it will probably hurt a bit less. This way, if you don't want people to see the tattoo, you can just wear your hair down.

That is a very sweet gesture. If you are worried about its placement and colour being too much later in life, you could always get a white tattoo. They are so subtle. If you haven't seen one before, google it.

Yeah I've seen white ones, they are pretty but I think I'm going to get medium blue or black. I'm pretty sure now about the wrist. I'm definently only going to get one tattoo. I live in NJ, very close to NYC, does anyone know any good places in NYC? I want to definently get a safe one (no hepatitis here) and I want to make sure they do the script right and everything. I'm actually very excited now, but I still want to think about it a little more. The back of my neck is nice but IDK I want to be able to look at it really easily when I feel bad or whatever. Thanks girls!

Okay well it looks like I found a very reliable place, it's right down the street from where my mom teaches yoga which is an odd coincidence. My mom wants me to wait until next September 11 (one year after he died) to get it. I'm going to draw it on for a while and see if I get used to it, etc. Maybe I'm thinking that next to the initials on both sides there would be a wing like he is in heaven. But I'm going to see how I like it and then decide if I want it.

Good luck - post a picture if you get it done, I'd love to see it!

I'll give you some tattooing advice before you go, since it sounds like it'll be awhile.

I don't know your line of work, but that should go into placement. I have three tattoos (two on ankles, one around the waist), and if you're in a line of work that's more conservative, make sure you're going to be able to cover it and cover it well. A bulky bracelet or thick watchband could work. I know you want to see the reminder, but you should also factor in practical stuff, too.

Tattoos vary in pain. I'm not going to lie to you. They can and do hurt. Women have a higher pain tolerance than men, so you should be okay (all my artists told me this.) Depending on your pain tolerance, it may feel like nothing, it may hurt a lot. I've known people with zero pain tolerance survive huge tattoos. The key for me is to divert my mind and to remember that the pain is temporary.

Look at the artist's portfolio before you get inked. It's critical.

Cost doesn't always equal quality. Some people are really overhyped and there are some cheap gems. But don't cut corners if you don't like the work.

www.bmezine.com. They have lots of tattoo stories and pics to look at.

When you do get inked, follow the artist's tips and take good care of your tattoo so it doesn't look crappy later.

If you want any more advice or tips, just post some more.

what a wonderful and sweet idea!! I think the wrist is a good idea and as Beauty Mark mentioned above you could cover it with a bracelet because let's face it - the whole world (especially the work force) is not always friendly to tattoos. I think it's ridiculous but hey, ya gotta get paid, right?

I would love to see a pic when you go through with it!

I think smallish tribute tats should go on the wrist, I dont know why...thats just what I feel. hehe...

Make sure that you actually like the shop too. Some shops are good but if you walk in and you feel out of place or something or the ppl there make you kinda anxious (all tough looking biker guys or something) then you dont have to go there.

Back at my hometown (Ottawa) there are several good shops down the one street downtown but they are all painted dark and look like crazy creepy places, so I go to the one light coloured, greatly layed out, friendly, shop (Planet Ink). It is slightly more expensive than the less nice looking ones, but you do pay for the quality there. Very thorough, and both the piercers that I have had there are sweet.

So yeah, make sure you feel comfortable (as comfortable as you could be, probably all hyped up on adrenalin and such..

)in the shop.

Good luck!

I think wrist as well and believe me it does NOT hurt as much as you think, I have a star on my inner wrist and it's my only tattoo, so get rid of those fears coz it doesn't hurt much at all (also from someone with a low tolerance pain level!) It'll be great.

Oh just don't clench your fist as you might be inclined to do!

Good Luck!!!

I wish it felt like that!!!! I got my last name on my lower back and it felt like i was being burned and having needles dragged across my body! The burning feeling was the worst like someone lit me on fire!
My cat scratches me allllll the time LOL i wish it felt like that 'cuz i'm so used to my vicious cat scratching me hehehehe

I think you should get it on the inner wrist or even the back of the neck! When my neighbour's son died, the husband and wife both got his initials done on their chest close to their hearts.

Don't worry about the pain....it is bearable! I was more nervous to get it done then when we started. You get used to the feeling and since it will be small, it will be done so quickly! The most important thing is that you are doing this in memory of your father and it will be so worth it in the end when its done! I'm psoitive you're going to be like "oh that's it? let's do it again!!" Good luck & let us know what you decide!

I have a star on my wrist as well & it took all of 5 mins to do, if that. No pain what so ever. I think that would be a perfect place for you to get one.

Good luck! And do post pics if you get it!

Thanks everyone! I'm definently doing the wrist, but not for a while. I'm just worried what my grandma and stuff will think. I mean I can cover it up so easily with a watch band or something. I wear lots of bracelets now so it won't look awkward.
