my first tattoo took 6 hours and was a full colour portrait of Marilyn Monroe on my wrist. it didn't hurt at all, trust me the wrist isn't as painful as you'd think.

the only part that hurt was the colour part close to my hand, but that was in the 6th hour and i really wanted something to eat so i was moody haha!

i just got a new one on the back of my neck on Tuesday, and that one kind of hurt but the guy who did it had an extremely heavy hand, so that explains the pain.

i'd suggest going to the shop a couple times and watching the artist. by watching them, you can usually tell whether they have a light or heavy hand and trust me, the lighter hand, the better. too heavy a hand WILL result in pain, and CAN result in some pretty nasty scarring.

just be ready, a tattoo is a series of little pins injecting ink into your skin, so...if you've ever stuck yourself with a pin, it's gonna feel like that, only about a million times. it won't really hurt, but it's gonna sting a little afterwards. and definately don't pink at it once it starts scabbing! don't use anything scented on it, just get plain unscented Dial soap to clean it with. never wipe it dry, always pat it to dry it after cleaning. and definately don't use any Neosporin on it, it's all about A&D ointment.

Sorry for the bump but I just wanted to say that I really like your idea for a tribute tattoo. I got one for my father a few years ago (he passed in 98) and it was my second tattoo (it's also a side piece). It was 2 three hour sittings but was well worth it. I now have a third tattoo and I plan on getting tons more. The letters are a great idea and my brother and I were thinking of getting matching initials sometime, but I think my brother wimped out on me.

Anthem has some really good tips, especially the scented thing. I made that mistake the hard way and it burnnned so badly. I also use aloe on mine once it starts to peel. Mind you yours is going to be small and will heal really quickly.

Good luck with it.

One of my friends got a tattoo on the inside of her finger - well, not the INSide, but the side - so that when she has her fingers together you can't see it. I thought that it was a pretty cool idea, and i'm interested in getting one myself..
