my first tattoo took 6 hours and was a full colour portrait of Marilyn Monroe on my wrist. it didn't hurt at all, trust me the wrist isn't as painful as you'd think.
the only part that hurt was the colour part close to my hand, but that was in the 6th hour and i really wanted something to eat so i was moody haha!
i just got a new one on the back of my neck on Tuesday, and that one kind of hurt but the guy who did it had an extremely heavy hand, so that explains the pain.
i'd suggest going to the shop a couple times and watching the artist. by watching them, you can usually tell whether they have a light or heavy hand and trust me, the lighter hand, the better. too heavy a hand WILL result in pain, and CAN result in some pretty nasty scarring.
just be ready, a tattoo is a series of little pins injecting ink into your skin, so...if you've ever stuck yourself with a pin, it's gonna feel like that, only about a million times. it won't really hurt, but it's gonna sting a little afterwards. and definately don't pink at it once it starts scabbing! don't use anything scented on it, just get plain unscented Dial soap to clean it with. never wipe it dry, always pat it to dry it after cleaning. and definately don't use any Neosporin on it, it's all about A&D ointment.
