The MAC Essentials?

Hey guys!

I want to get my younger cousin a really nice starter set of makeup from M.A.C. but I don't want to completely overdo it. She's going to be 17 and she's got a little box of very old hand-me-down makeup (THAT I CANNOT GET HER TO THROW AWAY!!
ssad.gif
) so I'm thinking if I got her a nice starter kit she would eliminate some of that nasty stuff.

What are the MUST HAVES for any makeup box? What (not ridiculously expensive) amount of products could I get her for the most use and versatility? I was thinking MAC because she'd find that to be a bit more trendy, but I'm open to any lines you think are the essentials. Hopefully we can narrow down what is to come. Don't forget the brushes!

You ladies are the experts, I look forward to hearing your input!

I'd suggest:
Foundation and/or Loose powder
Some neutral shadows
Technakohl in Graphblack
Mascara
Blush or one of those MSF duos that just came out
Highlighters
Lipglasses

Brushes:
#190 or foundation brush
#224 or domed brush for blending
#213 or any flat fluffy brush
Angled brush
Kabuki

And a brush cleaner and make-up remover too. Sorry it's so general, i could be more specific if you could give her shade and what looks she likes to do. Good luck with the gift!

She's usually an NW 15 but she's been spending this summer in the beach so I'm going to have to slip into the MAC store and get her matched without tossing hints about the gift. :p She's got light eyes but I guess they'd be hazel. Dark brown hair with golden highlights.

I really appreciate everyone's help! The remover and cleaner were good ones that I completely forgot about!

Just a suggestion, but i really dont think for someone who is just starting to get a whole "starter" set of makeup from MAC is a great idea. MAC is very expensive and i remember how i treated my makeup when i was 17. Now im 21 and am like oh god thank goodness i didnt have expensive stuff. I would maybe get a FEW things from MAC maybe 3 awesome brushes and liek 2 shadows, or an even better idea would to get her an appointment to get her makeup done and buy the stuff she lovess that they use on her. And tell her this is a START to her makeup collection.

I'm 16 and I love my makeup and in general teens don't really treat their makeup bad.

I really think this is a nice idea and it's only about the basics, right? Not a complete start kit on how to get each and every look in the book.

Allthough I really do like your idea on getting her makeup done and get her the things she likes!! That should be a fun experiance for both of you!

This can get expensive really fast, as I'm sure that you already know,
winks.gif
but I think these things are the best to have when starting. They're what I would started off with knowing what I know now:

Foundation
Concealer
Powder (only to set certain foundations, otherwise, not)
Blush/MSF (one general favorite color)

5 Basic Brushes (foundation, powder, blush, 2 shadow brushes) Gift sets are the best prices, but I don't like the quality.

Painterly Paint Pot
Highlight Shade
Lid Shade
Crease Shade (or just two colors if you use the highlight over the entire lid)
Mascara

Lipliner
Lipstick
Gloss

This is very general/generic, but a good start. Obviously you don't HAVE to have everything, but it's a great running start, something that is easy to add to later when you have all the essentials down.

Two other great items to have are Wipes, a Primer if she needs it.

Unless her skin is really bad, I'd probably skip foundation for now, honestly. Most people I know skip it in the summer if at all possible, and it's not always absolutely necessary. Concealer, however, is a must. I'd say the select moisturecover from MAC. It can be tricky to match, though, depending on where she'd want to use it. I, for example, am generally lighter than NW15 and need an NW20 to cover my bloody undereye circles.

Based on an NW15ish skintone, my recommendations are as follows:

I'd say... concealer, a self-made quad with a good highlight (I LOVE blanc type since it's matte, but Phloof! is great too. Shroom does NOTHING for me), two neutrals (Sable and All That Glitters go wonderfully together, and the hint of plum in sable would go nicely with her hazel eyes) and one fun colour (if she likes purple, it would go nicely with Sable - satellite dreams, perhaps?), one blush (I love peachtwist or shy beauty BPB), a brush set (honestly, the quality is just fine for someone first starting). Also, some sort of base. My favourite is bare canvas paint, but bare study paint pot could also be used as a shadow in and of itself.

I'd go drugstore for mascara and lipgloss. They work just peachy, and at a much lower cost, which saves you and shows her that makeup doesn't have to all be higher end to work well. I know some people would disagree, but I'm a maybelline mascara girl (my lashes are super long and nicely full on their own, and I love how intensely black their mascaras can be) and Rimmel vinyl lip lipgloss or the vinyl stars lipgloss works great. The Kiss Off stuff is to be avoided, as it smells and tastes fairly awful. This is also where I would get eye makeup remover. Plus, I'd grab at least a black and a brown eyeliner pencils (again, Rimmel is great for this. I have a whole slew of Rimmel pencils mixed in with my MAC). I use baby shampoo to clean my brushes, as I find it does a wonderful job of thoroughly cleaning them, and is gentle and conditioning enough to keep them super soft; I have a Quo brand blush brush that actually got softer after I washed it a few times with baby shampoo.

I don't know if she's the type to go for lipstick. I know many younger girls don't ever use it, and there are certainly decent drug store ones she can pick up later on her own.

In summary, I recommend:
-select moisturecover concealer
-an empty quad
-blanc type or phoof! pro pan
-sable pro pan
-all that glitters pro pan
-satellite dreams pro pan
-peachtwist blush or shy beauty powder blush if you can still get it
-mac brush set
-neutral paint or paint pot
-drugstore mascara
-Rimmel vinyl lip or vinyl stars lip gloss or two or however many you think
-Rimmel eyeliner pencils in black and brown
-drug store eyemakeup remover
-baby shampoo

I think that is everything one really needs to get started. Foundation is a very personal thing that if she wants, I'd say she should look into getting herself - plus, she can always ask you for help. It won't totally break the bank for you, and I believe it's important to remember that there is some great drug store makeup that holds up right next to the more expensive stuff. The only other thing I'd possibly add on to that list would be a pressed blot powder.

Cheers!

Wellm I started a collection (I'm a teen) not too long ago. I'd get:

-A quad of neutrals, maybe Phloof!, All that Glitters, Woodwinked and a nice brow filling-in color, maybe Omega. Get the pans at the store.
-A Maybelline lipgloss and mascara
-UDPP or L'oreal De-Crease
-SFF, but she'll have to get re-matched up for this
-Blacktrack or Dipdown
-Face primer (if you get her Monistat gel, though, you'll HAVE to explain it, lol. Attatch a note!)
-Blushbaby blush
-Sonia Kashuk set of brushes. I just got the Fluff and Pointed Blending brushes, and I already have the angle eyeliner, highlighting (stippling) and blush brushes. I get the white handled ones as they're cheaper but still amazing quality!
-A makeup remover (I like Neutrogena)
-A makeup mirror from Conair or something
-Baby shampoo
-makeup bag or small traincase

I feel like this is too long. :/

She's only 17. So I would only get her an eye shadow quad, brown or black eyeliner, mascara & 1-2 light glosses.

I have a cousin who is 16 & she doesn't wear any makeup @ all.

I would have her do a basic skin care regiment. You're never too young to start. Explain to her the importance of skin care.

- cleanse
- moisterize
- exfoliate lightly 1x a week
- drink lots of water
- don't smoke

I would completely agree if I didn't know my cousin! :p She won't leave the house without makeup. It's just that some of the things she has are just so old and gross so I wanted to start her fresh with some nice things. I am strongly considering now just bringing her in for a consultation but I fear if I have her with me I'll end up spending more than I intended. (You know how they can get and I can't say no.) Not to mention, I've been buying department store brands since I was her age and I treasured those more than any other makeup I had and took extremely good care if it. I'd still have some now if it weren't for hygiene's sake.

Sanayhs -- LOVE the baby shampoo idea. She does have full eyelashes, so this might work for her. (Unlike me with my puny ones, she can probably go drugstore with those too!)

and Seeking Refuge-- I totally forgot about Sonia Kashuk brushes!! They're really good for the price! Yay TARGET!

Kellybean- Definitely not too long, I appreciate you taking out the time to help me! I appreciate all of you taking the time to help me.

Phloof and All that glitters have repeated themselves.

I'm just going to have to print out this thread, make notes on it, and bring it with me. I think that's the only way I'll be able to remember all of the great suggestions. :p

You're absolutely right. That was the FIRST thing she and I went over!

She's been really great about that for the past few years! I wish my older sister were as good about it as she is. (My sis will use dial soap on her face. I die every time I catch her!)

Im 17 and i take care of my makeup like it was my baby lol anyways my mom got tired of me messing with her MAC so she bought me my own and now im addicted

A nice moisturiser is the #1 thing u need

1.I started off with a powder foundation because i was just starting off so i dont need to much on my face she took me to get matched

2.next she got me neutral colors first because i dont need to much since im still a teen

3.i got a nice natural blush for my skintone(only if she likes it)

4.lipgloss,lipstick,lip pencil (what ever she prefers)

5. any brand mascara or eyepencil

6. if she is a begineer she dosent need a expensive brush set until she get the hand of it so i reccommend a sonia kashuk brushset or essence beauty

I've wanted to get my cousin a starter set of good makeup too, but I haven't gotten her anything yet.
She's one of those who doesn't really take care of her stuff.
She'll just toss her makeup in her purse, and it'll shatter, etc.
However, I do pass things along to her that I didn't like or don't use. For now, that works out for us. I'd love to buy her some nice makeup one day when she takes care of her things.

I think:
*Phloof, Shroom or Vanilla eyeshadow would be good as a light base or highlight shade
*Satin Taupe as a crease shade
*A darker brown/black, like Smut or Brun maybe to use a liner or to darken outer v
*Springsheen blush
*MSF natural if there is one in her shade
*Love Nectar lustre glass

Hey! I definitely think now is a great time for her to get MAC. In my opinion, it's not that expensive compared to a lot of other brands...mascara is only a few dollars more than at a drugstore and the quality is much better IMO. I think you should get her a started set of brushes like the ones that are coming out with the Colour Forms collection at Nordstroms. I looked at them and they're pretty nice. I know they aren't as nice as the full sized brushes but they're wonderful for a beginner!

Shroom and Woodwinked e/s--very naturnal for everyday kind of look
Springsheen Blush--it's amazing!
Some type of lipgloss!
Mascara
Colour Form or another brush set
Brush Cleaner too!

Keep it simple!! Eyeliner and such was too much makeup for me when I was younger...I don't even wear it all the time now!

Yeah I agree too, it's not like I'm taking her to Dior! I really appreciate your feedback, I guess I'm going to let the post run a few more days and then print it out. :p

Does anyone think the coastalscents.com brushes are worth it?

I've never tried them, but I've heard good things about them! A ton of people have them on YouTube, you could check that out.
