Unflattering Trends- Ignore 'Em Or Embrace 'Em?

What do you all do when the hottest look just doesn't work on you?
Do you just pass it by, wear it anyhow, or try to find a flattering variation on it that *does* work for you?
For example, neutral pinky-beige lips have been The Look this spring and summer, but that color makes me look like I need a blood transfusion- NOW!
So, even though a friend keeps telling me, "That look is on every magazine cover!" I've just nonchalantly put on my MAC "Impassioned" and looked healthy.
BUT when the shine craze started a few years back, I was pushing 40 and automatically thought, "I'm too old for that!" But people(including the aforementioned friend) reminded me, "You've still got smooth skin; show it off!" so I decided to try the shimmery look, and I LOVE it!
So it doesn't hurt to *try*......
How does everyone else handle the trend thing?

if it's not flattering, I skip it, regardless of how hot it looks on everyone else.

Exactly, I am not going to look like sh*t so I can be trendy. I do go with the trend very often however I have to draw the line if something, like skinny jeans, is going to make me look fatter or shorter.

Sometimes something takes a while to grow on me. A lot of trends I don't like at first, but end up embracing later on. I enjoy finding my own takes on them. Still, some trends are just too out there for me.

Makeup is like clothes, not every style fits everyone, so it goes the same for makeup!

Why wear something if it makes you look worse?

Trends are trends, there passing, and new ones are always coming up! Just try to stick to the ones that suit you, and don't do it because everyone else is doing it!

I skip trends if they're not flattering on me or I don't like them...for instance, the french mani/pedi trend...I don't do pale nails...never have, never will...the richer the color, the better for me!

There are certain trends I won't follow (I'm thinking more like clothes.) Most trends I'll at least try once, either in a store or in my house. However, I won't follow a trend if it doesn't work.

trends are only fun if they look good on you. If the trend sucks, you can always find a classic look thats always in style.

I agree. I wear what looks good on me, not what's trendy. Lately there's been a lot of pastel pink blue and purple shades coming out for makeup and I hate them all, so I just wear what I know works.

Life is too short (and my money too tight) to wear or use something that just doesn't suit me.

i've never been a person to try something JUST because it was the trend. if i see a trend and i do like it then i'll go for it....but never just because everyone else was doing it.

i really like pale lips. i can't pull off anything else. brights and reds somehow seem to suck the rest of my face into my lips, like a weird black hole

i guess i'm pretty lucky in that i can pull off a bunch of other stuff, though. i can wear virtually any color on my eyes without it looking weird.

so no, i dont follow the trends, but if i see something i like, you can bet ill jump on it

Honestly, I don't do trends. Sometimes I'll try something I might not have considered, but mostly I just do what works on me aesthetically, and what suits my mood.

Is it bad that I can honestly say I haven't noticed any recent makeup trends..? The only ones that stick out in my mind are smokey eyes and pale lips. I really don't notice what's popular because honestly I don't care. I wear what I like and what makes me look good.

I actually hate a lot of trends since everyone ends up looking the same. Most people avoid wearing identical outfits as their friends when they go out. The same applies for me and my makeup. What's the point in spending loads of time on yourself if you're just going to blend in? (oh yes.. i'm that narcissitic...)

i try to avoid trends, and only get stuff that i personally like. usually i always find some way to interpret something really fashionable into what i already have, and don't have to carbon copy magazines/celebrities, because if there is one thing i can't stand it's trend whores with no personal style.

I agree with the people above me.
I try to avoid trends and focus on my tastes and what "I" think suits me. I used to buy every issue of various fashion/makeup magazines just to see what trendy stuff was, but now I don't even bother looking at them unless I'm extremely bored and have time to kill cause I don't want to care about trends anymore and by spending money on magazines, I'd feel like I'm buying all those advertisements in mags.

Of course, I do get inspired by beautiful/sexy/unique people&things though.

So, I'm basically the "I like what I like. & I know what I want." type.

I was too little for the tight leggings underneath skirts/shorts in the 80s and I'm too old for this trend in 2006 - life isn't fair sometimes <grin>
The baby doll shirt trend worked when I was 18 but when I was 27 and it was still in style it was irritating, I'm loving the long hems on shirts this year.

Makeup - I've always more or less followed trends but kept a classic look to keep. It took me a while to warm up to neutral lips though but I do wear a neutral lip look occasionally.

Trend means sticking to what everyone else is doing. Be original. Makeup is an art, do what you want with it. Just stick to basic rules (i.e. if you have lots of wrinkles somewhere, don't put shimmer eyeshadow on them). If people judge you for it, they aren't worth talking to.
