somehow I think the most modern way to wear lipstick is the most traditional way. From the tube or with a brush. to me liner + lipstick + gloss is a very outdated look. But that's just my opinion. When I was trained I was taught to follow these steps and I really think we are over the perfectly lined lips or glossy lips. But thats my opinion. Just like drag-like cut creases with liquid liner, and a brow highlight.... So to me wearing a lipliner that's darker and then myth... it's a nono. but you have a different style and skin tone so....show us!
I agree with you somewhat about lipstick sraight from the tube being traditional and for a lot of women it works with most lipsticks. I however want to add that for a lot of WOC a liner is sometimes essential to being able to wear nudes or bold, bright lipsticks. I am talking about coordinating or neutral liners close to the natural color of the lip...not dated super dark liner and a pale lip. I also think that saying cut creases are dated is a little bit of a broad statement as well. If you look at runway or current fashion magazines I'm sure you will see a version of it.

I LOVE Prince and RR, those two were the highlights of that collection for me. The lip erase idea with chestnut sounds interesting, is the erase a pro item?

Exactly!
i don't see it on the site. some counters have it, pro probaly does. I really love Chestnut and it looks great with some of the sheerer pink and peach glosses over it.

Bee, I have made a lot of lipsticks work for me by following your advice and picking up Stripdown -- great advice.

I heart you for this. I really do. I couldn't generate words for those statements because I was too busy laughing and making the o_O face LOL. But to add to what you said... not only do WOC wear lip liner, but white women wear it as well. To be honest, I sell lip liner to them more. They usually use lip liner to make their lips appear fuller, but a lot of the also wear liner for the same reasons WOC do... to add effect to a lipstick OR to make the lipstick more wearable. I forgot her Specktra name, but a gal paired Cherry lip liner with Red Racer lipstick and it looked amazing. It made Red Racer MORE RED than it was. She's not a WOC by the way.

I paired NYX Purple Rain lip liner with Girl About Town lipstick and lipglass not because they aren't wearable alone, but because I wanted to add effect to the look (I went out that night).

Another example is where I paired NYX Purple Rain lip liner with Famously Fab! lipglass. Again, not because Famously Fab! isn't wearable on it's own, but because I wanted to add effect and I was going out. Plus it looked better and made my lips more purple. hehe

Above is the eye look that went with Purple Rain lip liner and Famously Fab! lipglass.

Yay!! You're welcome! I can't tell you how many times I've sold Stripdown to women around your complexion. I like Stripdown for ya'll because it's not a super dark brown. It complements your skin tone effortlessly. I am sooooo glad you're enjoying the liner. Makes me happy. ^____^

I have one in the works! It takes a lot of time and effort...so you ladies who have blogs...I commend you!
Girl, the only reason why I have time to blog is because the Spring semester is over and I'm not taking summer courses so I have a lot of free time. But I recently went back to the counter and started working again so hopefully I will have time to post. If I do, it will be FOTD's of the looks I'm wearing for work.

Whenever your blog is up and ready let me know! ^____^

I use lip liner to brighten some lipsticks (I have pigmented lips and everything turns red and darker on me), and I must wear lip liner with some lipstick that are not easy for me to apply.. and what about beautiful effects like this?

of course I don't like lip liner used this way:

anyway I usually apply lipsticks straight from the tube!

LOL...i was just giving an example of when a liner is essential. I sell a liner with almost every lipstick i sell...so obviously many women use them as they find necessary. I will definitely let you know when i get my blog up and running.

The Pam A. picture is definitely a no-no, LOL but the FIRST picture is soooo right!..... this is EXACTLY why I tell my customers at the counter, clients, friends, and makeup buddies to never underestimate the power of lip liner. Her makeup looks amazing!!

Selling lipliners with lipsticks is a great way to meet sales goals. I don't think women specifically find them necessary, they just want to recreate the look created for them in the stores. Most of the time, liner gets used a for a bit, then falls by the wayside. I swear everyone I know has liners barely used. No one from MAC has ever tried to sell me a liner when I buy a lipstick and two or three unrelated items, but if I just buy a lipstick, they are always offering me liner suggestions, trying to get that multi item sale.

Love that first look. When I went to the NARS counter she lined my lips with Train Bleu just loke this and used some other color where the lighter color is. It was so pretty! Pam's lipstick is so 90's and since then we have evolved, thankfully! Emiem's wife wore her lipstick like this too, with much more liner.

LOL, I never do such. I care about my customers because when you leave from the counter, it's a reflection of ME. I want you to be satisfied with your purchase. I have many customers that only come in on the days that I work because they love the makeup I did on them, my recommendations and quality service. And as stated above, lip liners sell out a lot at my counter. Especially popular ones like Spice, Stripdown, Cherry, and Cork. I don't worry about meeting my quota because I'm well known and I'm honest. I don't have to push products down a customer's throats. Not all employees are like that. Trust me. There are a lot of us who genuinely care.

Personally the extra $14 doesn't make or break my sales goals, so that wouldn't be a reason for me suggesting a liner with a particular corresponding lip product.  I can also tell you that my counter is constantly out of our top selling liners, because people that use MAC generally want a complete look, whether they intend to use all products on a daily basis or just when they want to have a more polished look.  As a professional makeup artist my goal is to make sure my clients are happy with the service I provide to them at the counter as well as being able to successfully recreate the look on their own at home....so trust me I don't push unnecessary products on people to "make sales goals".  I would much prefer you purchase what you really want, rather than returning things (which by the way negatively affects sales), or being generally confused or unhappy with our products.   I would also concede that just as many women that have unused lip liners have tons of other makeup products that were either too much of an extra step or not the right color/consistency.  So again to each her own...some find them necessary for daily wear...some special occasions...some can do without...that is the beauty of makeup!
It works this way too. Suggesting complementary products to make sales goals isn't a bad thing especially when artistry is involved. I have worked in retail and direct sales selling what I love; and no matter what if you are passionate about what you have to offer and stand behind what you sell you are going to want to share it with others. For some sales goals are the gravy and for some they are just necessary to work. It's different for everyone. But regardless of the reason, it's ok. In my experience, upselling is apparent. Everyone has different motives and goals to meet. And you are right, everyone has makeup they buy and don't use. I think something simple as a lipstick, overall, tends to be worn alone even though liners are suggested.

I love lip liner; I never wear lipstick without it. I tend to use it with l/g as well. I don't do the heavy 90s line (I didn't do it then either), but I think they add a lot to the look. Sometimes I just line my lips, sometimes I blot the colour down onto the lip to either make the look last or to change up the shade of what's coming next. I love that I can create completely new colours by adding a lipliner. The same lippie can look completely different because of the liner chosen.

I adore Kinda Sexy - but only when I line with Nice N Spicy. It just faded away before that. Same with Razzledazzler.

I love Chicory liner - great colour for me. I've been wearing Ravishing l/g over it all spring to give me an orange lip that I really like.

I couldn't make GAT l/g work - I'm now wearing More To Love liner (sheer application) and then layering some Lust over it. It's still pink, but it warms the colour up just enough to make it wearable for me.

None of my liners collect dust. I love and use them all. Nice N Spicy, Chicory, Spice, Burgandy and Red Enriched are staples I reach for again and again.

I think that was me, thanks girl. I just like to fill in my lips with a coloured liner similar to the lipstick so it stays on better and to make it easier to apply neatly. It is cool though to see how the lipliner can change the lipstick. Liners aren't necessary for every lipstick, but i think for bright colours and reds especially they are really helpful.

That's true, but I am mostly straight out the tube. I think anything is wearable with some work and extra products. It's fun to mix and match too see what works, but that's a look for the my weekends/ going out. Day to day it's one tube, straight out my makeup bag.
I'm exactly the same! if it doesn't work straight from the tube usually i don't bother. lip liners for me are something for nights out or if i am wearing a red lip :)

I love liners. I never ever wear gloss without one. I have no idea why that is other than I'm a creature of habit. Lol.

sss215 - did you get the Spice l/g? I have it and love it and you know we have similar tastes. It's a very nice neutral. It made me finally give Heroine (from WW so the brown gloss not the purple matte lipstick) a break.

Speaking of liners with gloss, I tried Spice with NYX's Pumpkin liner and I adored the combo. On paper it doesn't look like it would work, but I would tell anyone to try it. Something about the burnt orange in the liner helped bring out the rosey part in the gloss. Again, sounds weird, but it was very nice.

Hey You! I am off to get one after work today. I can't remember if I have the pumpkin liner or not... But if I do, I will try that combo. Thanks! The rose in there is drawing me in. Since my bottom lip is pink, I look at colors that are pinkish or rose ish in someway and frost free. Hope you are doing well Hony Br!!! I forgot to add, I wonder if Spice looks like any of the OCC Lip Tars. Does anyone know?
