MAC Interviews & Hiring Process

its all different i was never a freelancer i was hired as a permanent. so i would assume it would be like your first interview. what have you learned areas to grow etc.. what can yo bring to the table and why do you think you should be permanent

what are the pros and cons of being a freelancer vs. permanent artist?

Hey ladies so I filled out my paperwork yesterday and I'm officially a MAC freelancer. It has taken so long, but I'm excited!!!! After my first two interviews last year, I was told I would be put on the freelance team. Months and months went by and I heard nothing or was told they were waiting for my number. A year went by and I called the regional back and asked what happened. She told me to come in and apologized for the confusion. I was told that I didn't have to do the demo again and my paperwork would be processed. Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll 3-4 months later, lol I went in to fill out the paperwork. I'll be assigned a home store in the city and I am free to freelance in the city and the burbs. Just be patient girls. The process can be really nerve-wrecking and tiring, but good things come to those who wait and in the meantime, just focus on everything else in front of you. God bless.

I finally built up the nerve to drop off my resume and application and the next day I got an email from a recruiter! I have a scheduled phone interview tmrw!!!!

I'm new here and I am about to go drop off my application at several of my local M•A•C counters!!! Is there anything that I should know or some that I should do in particular???

Make sure you wear all black gear!! & wear full face makeup (MAC)....don't overdue it with bright colors! Good Luck!!

Well ladies, my interview today with the Southwest Recruiter went excellently. I will be interviewing directly with the store manager in the coming weeks. Not sure which store here in Los Angeles yet but I'm super jazzed! The recruiter was very personable and seemed impressed with my creds. Most importantly she said she loved my makeup and didn't even critique me. I will keep the masses posted as things progress. ;-)

you want to be perm trust me. all the good stuff happens to for the perm artists.you get gratis you get training you can move up in the company for higher positions. mac is gonna hire someone perm first if they can so they dont have to spend the money to train someone new to be honest. mac hires from within the company. you are also guaranteed your hours every week. freelancers have to call and fright for hours . freelancers dont get basic training update training gratis they can't be product specialist or impact team or 3rd key. permanents get bonuses. if you have to travel as a permanent mac pays for it im on the impact team so i travel all over my state and mac pays for everything. freelancers dont get that you work where you can and its on your dime.

As much as I love PaparazziBoy, please ignore the statement that freelancers aren't as good and are just in training,  as it's not true. They stick you on as a freelancer if there are no perm positions available and they need more freelancers. They hire you as a perm artist if that's what they need at the moment. If they have both positions open, and they like you but maybe you're skills are lacking, at that point they would probably offer you the freelancing position instead of the perm position. But perm employees are in no way better or "deserved" the perm position more than the freelancer...it's not that way at all. The only employees who are full time (more than 37 hours a week) are the manager, asst manager, and 3rd key. All new hires are given the least amount of hours and have to work their way up with hours based on tenure.

I am a career professional with a totally different background not involving makeup. When asking if I was interested in a freelance position or permanent position, I was adamant that was interested in a permanent position. A full-time position was open and the rest is history. Confidence and going for what you want is key. I'm one week in and looking forward to a thriving career with the MAC family.

i will say congrats on getting full time position. those are hard to come by it all varies by the region your in an the the timing has to be right. in my region NO ONE LEAVES I MEAN NO ONE! i work with people who have been there 14 years 5 and 6 years that are still part time artist at 25 hours. it all depends on the market your in and if i will allow for the full time positions. i have been with the company for a few years now. so i understand how things work in MAC you will too once your in fully and get the grasp of the company. i too had a background that was no wear near makeup when i interviewed. permanent positions are few and far between in most cases. mac will give every location in the US a list of open positions all over the country so they have the first pick at applying for those positions if they are interested in it before hand. so we get to go for things first before they open it up to a career call or interviewing freelancers. if no one applies or the manager feels they dont have the right candidate from with in the company then its opened up for others to apply. that is how it works in my region as i have been there for the hiring process of others as well have moved up positions from when i started with the company

Thanks so much PapazziBoy! I really appreciate that. I'm located in Los Angeles. Again I know how fortunate I am to land such a coveted position in a top competitive market. My demo interview consisted of 7 MAC artists that were either already freelance or had move to the LA from other MAC regions. Only one other girl and myself had a different career background (so there were 9 of us total). I also know that other candidates vying for my position were artists already with MAC as well. I beat out 4 other candidates (I asked... that's the kind of girl I am... hahah) so I'm pleased as punch! I will say that reading this forum helped me throughout the interview process and for that I say THANKS everyone!

Congratulations! Each regions is definitely different. I, too had no makeup experience what so ever, and was interviewed with M.A.C and it went very well. I was hired as a freelancer initially, and then 2 months later was hired permanent at a M.A.C Store. I have recently been assigned the task of product specialist and am loving every moment of it. Continue to enjoy all the fun and walking through the doors of opportunity that is now availble to you!

Hey Everyone!

TWO YEARS LATER!!!! After not passing my demo the first time, AND after much persistence, I have my demo again on Friday. The manager who originally interviewd me really liked me and has been a part of my MAC journey. She knew my qualifications were stellar and is really pushing for me, which is a great feeling.

It can happen and this website is glorious and SO helpful!!! Take in all the information you can and NEVER give up! The managertold me that a lot of people never keep trying after they've been turned down, and she really liked my willingness to try hard and really make it! It pays off!
