Working for Sephora

I had an interview with Sephora for the Operations Lead position on Friday. I got an email today stating that the District Manager wanted me to meet with another store manager before a final interview with her. During the first interview the store manager recognized me immediately because I shop there so often. She used a lot of forward thinking language with me and seemed like she was trying to sell me the job. I handed her a thank you note about 3 hours after the interview and bought something from the store. I linked up with the other store manager and I have the interview tomorrow. I have no direct retail experience which I stated in my resume but I have a lot of experience applying makeup which I explained. I have management experience in a large university (which when you look at it, you are trying to sell the school to potential students and families) but I am not so sure what my chances will be. Any advice or suggestions?
So I have reached the background check/reference check phase! But I am oddly worried. I know it is just because I worry about everything but what if my references don't say what they want to hear?

If you are currently working at Sephora, do you know if they do drug testing? I have gotten past the interview stages and I have been hired and I am already on the schedule and being [paid, but I have not yet been drug testing. Any ideas?

I dont think they drug test. I know someone who worked there who was an avid smoker and didnt have any trouble. I myself am worried about the credit check. I dont have great credit due to a bad relationship.

I just went through a two week detox and haven't smoked for almost a month now, but I do have something coming up in about a week and I'm nervous that it might cause some issues if I did get drug tested.

Which Sephora are you applying at? I didn't have a credit check at all.

I wouldnt worry but if it is really on your mind I would ask for the employment contract for your records and look it over. I was a little worried because when I agreed for the background check I wasnt sure if credit was a part of it. I am applying to a place in Connecticut.

I'm new to this forum. But I wanna apply for sephora. Every time I walk Into the store. I feel like I'm at home. I been in the restaurant business for about 5 years. Never had been in the makeup industry. I know about makeup but not to the extreme. Do you guys still think I should apply ? I wanna grow with the company. And learn more about makeup. They are currently only looking for a cashier nd seasonal. Which one do you think I got a better shot at?
I interviewed with Sephora in early November for a seasonal position. I went through one group interview and it was only me and two other girls. We were interviewed by both the Director in Charge of the store and the vice Director in Charge. I got a call three days later saying that I was hired as a seasonal employee.

On my first day the DIC (Director in Charge) introduced us to the rest of the cast who was working that day. She made a big deal about the fact that one of the girls who was now a makeup sales associate/consultant came to Sephora after having worked "in the fast food world". I mention this because I think it might not matter that you only have restaurant experience and no cosmetics experience, particularly if you are applying for a seasonal job. The might take into account your fast-paced efficiency and ability to move quickly on your feet.

I worked for Sephora for the season, from late November 2013 to late January 2013. In mid-January I was told that they would not be keeping me on as a permanent employee since they did not have enough room in their budget to hire all the seasonals. However, my DIC did tell me to apply again in 3 months time (April) and that she would definitely hire me again if there was an opening, since I exemplified Sephora's values.

I don't know who, if any of us seasonals got a permanent position at Sephora, but I do know that they hired at least 10 seasonal employees and could not possibly have kept them all.

My experience at Sephora was a good one, I enjoyed working there even though I was only a cashier. I absolutely intend to re-apply come April and try to get a permanent position. I know that one of the girls who worked for the holiday season had also worked the previous holiday season and she is probably one of the ones who got hired permanently because she showed her commitment to being a Sephora employee.

To the girl who asked about plus-size costumes, there were at least 2 or 3 girls at my Sephora who were plus-size and they were provided with tunics that fit.

Good luck to all who apply at Sephora and feel free to ask me any questions :)

This will probably be my last post for a while but I got the job! Just accepted my offer. The pay isnt stellar but it definitely will pay the bills so no complaints. I have no retail or makeup experience but I got a lead position. Sephora wants people who they think exemplify their values. Don't. Give up folks!

I work at Sephora inside JC Penney, and I want to leave for a "freestanding" Sephora. Are there any stipulations that will stop me from getting hired at freestanding Sephora?

Hey everyone! l have a question about Sephora (DUH!,lol). There is a new location opening in my area on May 9th and l've applied for Lead and Beauty Advisor, but have not gotten a response. A little background on me: l worked at MAC for a total of 6 years as an Artist and Freelancer, l worked at COACH as a Sales Associate for over 7 years, and was a Lead Teller at Wells Fargo for 2 years. l have the management experience needed for lead, and the retail experience for Beauty Advisor, but still, nothing. l applied online in January when l saw the job listing. l know the hiring process takes a while, and since it is a new store there will be training, etc before the early May opening. Do any of you have a suggestions for me, or are all bets pretty much off? Thanks!!!!

I started off at a brand new Sephora that was opening in my area. I can't recollect exactly how long it took, but it was a LONG time!

I was in the same position as you. I got hired by Sephora on November 2013 and I got laid off on January 2014 as they told me that they don't have any place to keep seasonal casts. I was extremely devastated as I love working there and felt like home and comfortable. A lead told me to keep hiring as she love the way i work and she will love to see me coming back. She gave me hope. So on my last day. I made sure that I bring with me my resume, recommendation letter, references, application form. And I gave to the lead before the end of my shift. And time by time. I checked in the mall website to see any opportunities. I came across the ad that Sephora was hiring for cashier. I jumped right into it. I sent an e-mail to the director stating that I saw that she looking for staffs and I would love to come back working for them. I even attach my resume to the e-mail. Guess what??? I GOT HIRED AGAIN!!!!! They said that they made up their mind when they saw me re-apply and I'm so happy and excited to be back working for them.

My advice to you is to be persistent. To battle for the position if ever they posted it. Don't wait on them. Make sure that you are constantly applying every 3-6 months. Check often with the location to see if they are hiring. Don't wait on them. Act on it. They will see that you are fighting to come back and they will eventually see that you are a worker that need to be kept. I didn't wait for Sephora to call me or e-mail. As soon I saw the position was up in the website. I went RIGHT INTO IT.... And now I'm back. The best advice I Can give you is to be persistent. CHECK! CHECK! CHECK! NOt like a psycho but someone who really want to go there

Depend. It's up to the Store Director of your store to tell you on your hours. You might be full time or part time or on call. You have to sit down with the director and ask them how much hours can you get and discuss the options. Only store directors can tell you this answer

I have worked for sephora for almost 7 years. I started reading this thread and I saw a lot of questions and thought I might provide some insight. Sephora stores are strange things. Although we are all part of the same company, each store can run very differently. We like to call in "living in the gray" . Store leadership teams have a lot of range to run the store based on what is best for their market. This means the overall environment can vary greatly from store to store. If you are interested in applying for a store I would highly recommend seeing how the employees interact with each other. This can say a lot about how the store is run. Does everyone get along well? Do they seem happy? Mostly what I would look for Is how do the managers seem to interact with the rest of the cast. A good leadership team will make or break what it's like to work in a store. As for what sephora looks for? A good nature and the want and will to help people. We are a very people based company which means red flags are people that are difficult or disruptive to a team environment. Also longevity is Huge. Sephora spends a lot of money training it's people. All these expenses come out of the stores budget and not the company's bottom line. This means SD's don't want to hire someone, spend thousands of dollars training them and then they leave a few months later. This is why they focus on this so much in the interview. Hours will vary really greatly by store. Larger stores have more hours, smaller stores have less. If you want hours though here is the formula: availability + performance. As for gratis? What can I say. It kicks major ass. Every store is going to be different on how it is distributed but as a general rule, brands send or bring it to your store and it is distributed based on training and how much or what world you work in. There is also all store gratis as well. The more you work the more gratis you are likely to receive. Sephora is a wonderful place to work. I have had some amazing opportunities, I have met some amazing people (next week I get to meet dani sans!!!!!). However I worked hard for it. It's still a job and not just a playground. I wouldn't have had all the amazing experiences or traveled to the places I have and received such amazing training if I hand' been willing to stick with the bad times just as much as the good. Anyways hope this was helpful and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hi everyone, I didn't want to open a new thread ince this is here but I have a few questions. First, I love makeup obviously and would love to get an opportunity to interview at Sephora. I am not a cosmetologist nor do I have experience putting makeup on other people, only myself. Could I still be hired as a cashier? I see they have an online application but is it better to just go in person and ask for an application? None of my work experience is related to makeup but I do have some customer service experience. Sorry if these questions have been asked before.

There is no paper application, apply online and follow up in the store. You also don't need to have previous cosmetic experience. Just strong customer service skills.

First of all, I love this forum and wish I had of known about it a LONG TIME AGO lol. So much info. I guess I'll share my interview experience with Sephora. I applied for a beauty advisor position sometime last year around when they first converted over to the online app. I checked back recently and saw that I didn't complete the application process it and it wasn't submitted :(. Just as a heads up, check back to ensure your application went through if you didn't receive a confirmation email. So I reapplied but this time as a Key Holder. I do have leadership experience and a lot of sales, retail and makeup artistry (currently licensed) experience. I visited the store a week later to follow up and got a 1st interview with the Store Director on the spot. She liked how it went and invited me to a second interview with two other sales leaders. It lasted about 30 minutes. They asked me how I'd handle certain situations and gave me a couple of scenarios. I assume it went well because my references were contacted. I followed up again in person (couldn't get in touch over the phone) two weeks later and she told me they were still interviewing candidates. It was sort of busy, so she didn't have time to say much else. I would like to work there as Key Holder because I'm looking for something full time but am wandering how long the process normally takes? I have another interview coming up and am anxious to know something. Thanks!
