Actually it is from significantly earlier. "The Rocky Horror Show" premiered in London in 1973, the live stage show. I saw the stage show live in LA in 1974 - it played there for 9 months - i saw it twice and Tim Curry was fantastic live. Out and gay was not common so having gay characters and a transexual character in the first half of the 70s was revolutionary - the stage show was certainly not mainstream. The movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" was made in 1975 - not the 80s, although maybe that's when some of you young folks () saw it.
Oh, I know it came out earlier but I was too young to watch it at that point. I discovered it at the old Seville Theatre in Montreal (sadly now destroyed - it was an old atmospheric theatre build in the 20s that once housed live acts like Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, etc). It was a repertory theatre in the early 80s where I watched RH over and over again.
